I spent a lot of time in that frat house as well, they had a great bar. I remember laying under one of the taps one night. Had a few buddies that were brothers. I also went to quite a few parties at the sigma chi house.

Good to hear. I was a Sigep at ETSU, graduated 2006, and I lived in that house for 3 years. My dues + rent was only $1200 for the entire semester, less than most paid in rent in any $hithole around campus.

I definitely didn't have daddy's credit card, just worked 2 jobs in the summer to save up.

Last I checked, they haven't been charged with a crime. Freedom is a two way street, and the 1st amendment doesn't protect anyone from consequences.

You asked "Can you name some other Frat houses where this is common?" so there you go. All those incidents were very similar and just as stupid.

Definitely different times. There is nowhere that isn't susceptible to video today. Yesterday's crude private comments are 60 seconds away from being viewed by millions of people.

I think this is exactly the rub with most folks particularly at the bigger schools where some of the groups tend to be very exclusive and oriented towards a certain class of people. I went to a small school in a not so big town where the locals weren't the friendliest towards students. My school was over 70 percent Greek among traditional students when I was there and you'd find all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds in most houses. I was in one of those groups where we flew the Confederate battle flag and dressed in the Grey for our annual ball and we had a Cuban (now a physician), half Asian (banker), a few Jews, and a couple of guys who turned out to be gay to the surprise of no one. I think this is a tempest in a teapot.

I gave you more examples. It's a reasonable assumption to assume in each of those cases, the behavior was common and not a random event.



Go back and read what I said. I said the organizations themselves need to get control of this problem. I'm not calling for an end to the Greek system or anything of that sort.

They simply need to address this in a way that actually fixes the problem. No courts, no lawyers. Just fix it.

Frankly, the attitude you are displaying is the very reason these issues continue to happen.

Are a few knuckleheads really a big problem? Are themed parties at private residences a problem? The two major ones where action was swiftly taken were appropriate (ole miss pledge and OU). But thanks for trying to portray me as okay with the song they were singing

  • Recruiting (hiring)

  • Facilities Management (manage house upgrades/renovations)
  • Community Service
  • Leadership Development

There aren't many other places where an 18-22 yr old will get the opportunity to learn these skills.

This is a great post and in line with how I feel about greek life and my experience.

I joined a fraternity at UT and during the 8 semester's I spent as an active brother, held a leadership position for 6. I learned many if not of the same skills you posted above. It gave my college life more purpose then just going to class and trying to get laid or party.

The rushing new members aspect has really helped me with my sales skills, ability to talk to groups of people and not be intimidated in intense sales pitch situations.

Overall Fraternities, like everything in life are what you make of them. They have a good percentage of guys who don't pay their bills and want to still reap the benefits of the group. Then there are some who want to help and be involved in anyway possible and make the best of the opportunity.

All in all I would recommend my son (if I ever have one someday) to join them, as long as they stay in a similar vein to how they operate today.

I would also tell him that a large majority of my best friends at the age of 30 are still from my fraternity days.

I married at 27 and 4 of my 7 groomsmen were in my fraternity with me.

It is much more than just a bunch of rich kids being snobs.

Every fraternity has a knucklehead or four.

Not all of them are dumb enough to record themselves singing racist songs and post them on the internet.

That takes a special kind of stupid.
