'16 NC QB Austin Kendall (former UT commit)

I would fully expect the coaches to say that. After all, it is SEC recruiting. Were the two EEs made aware they were taking a 3rd? After they were locked in, I'm sure they were. LOL

I don't know about both, but I do know that one was most definitely told about taking a 3rd.

Here's the timeline. They were told very early on that they were only taking 2. They were fully intending to follow through with this until Peterman decided (fairly early) to transfer, and then some lingering doubts/fears about QD's shoulder popped up. These 2 situations caused them to want to take a 3rd QB. I do know they told JJ, and can only assume they told QD. I have no problems with the way they handled things. Stuff happens in recruiting and you have to be fluid.

I would venture to say they were informed considering Butch and Jake visited Q and JJ before flying out to Cali to see Jones. Then Jones went public as TN is his leader after those 3 visits. People read message boards they knew before they enrolled that Jones was very likely coming here. They also knew Peterman was leaving so at that point it made a ton of sense. TN taking 3 QBs in same class doesn't effect the kids among the 3 that signed. It effects the following class as your sort of seeing with Kendall. It strengthens the odds that one of those kids in that class will be the real deal that you would potentially sit behind for 2-3 years.

There are still ways to recruit around signing the 3 QBs we did. Sherion Jones is the only guy you can really point at and say he for sure is someone you have to battle for the QB spot. JJ is a project at QB. He has a HIGH ceiling but also the biggest risk in terms of QB position. Q has had 2 shoulder issues pop up in past 2 years. One being the surgery and one that the staff was being quiet about and doesn't seem serious but anytime you talk a QB and shoulder it worries you long term

I just have never seen verified quotes posted that shows either EE knew before they were locked in that they were taking a 3rd. Yes, I get fans are saying it, just nothing to support it.

I'm not gonna quote Lv because I don't want to torture the rest of VN. However, I somewhat agree with Leb. I don't think Butch is devious but he definitely told Jones to wait until after the EEs were official before announcing. It's backhanded but it's also SEC recruiting in general.

I too thought Jennings and Dormady were aware of Tennessee's recruitment of Jones. In this day and age of internet and recruiting sites/news, it's not like they could have kept it a big secret. Maybe Butch asked Jones to wait to be absolutely certain that JJ and QD stayed on board, but it's not like he hid SJ's recruitment from them. A quick internet search could have given them enough cause for concern if there was concern to be had.

I get one could say JJ may not play QB. One could say QD has had shoulder issues. The fact is both guys will be lined up at QB day 1 of camp. I get you can claim whatever ya want in recruiting to try and explain over signing a position in a class like QB. When all 3 guys are QBs in camp, all those "things" you used to over sign the position just tells the next guy (Kendall) it was all BS. Imo, he's seeing that already and doesn't like it.

It was public knowledge the second week of December, a full month before the EEs reported, that Tennessee was looking to bring in Sheriron Jones....about the same time he named them his leader. He decommited around December 10 and immediately said Tennessee was his leader. A quick google search shows more than one article discussing his Florida decommit and subsequent naming of UT as his leader in early December. Here's one from December 10....

GVX Audio: Updates on quarterback prospects Quinten Dormady and Sheriron Jones - News Sentinel Story

I know you think it's a certainty that neither Jennings nor Dormady had any idea that Butch was still recruiting Jones and was looking to bring in a third QB in some clandestine, nefarious and dishonest way.....I don't.

Recruiting and telling a kid "we will take 3" is very different. Could be why Kendall seems to have an issue with what he's been told. Trust, it does come into play.

not sure on the exact timeline, but Jones decommitted from Florida on Dec 6th. I remember reading about Dormady showing up early (before the bowl) for a week just to see what it was like. i believe he had also signed his FAA by that point as well. while nothing binding had happened Dormady was locked in around the same time Jones decommitted. and with the silent period contact would have been limited between Butch and S. Jones. without knowing exactly what happened when this is baseless argument. there was also the very serious talk about Peterman leaving. maybe Butch didn't tell Dormady about that as well. maybe that would have made Dormady change his mind. (not sure why it could but while we are throwing around hypotheticals)

Like Smyrna said earlier I was told by some Rutherford County folks that JJ had been told that UT was looking at bringing in 3 QB's and according to them JJ said competition wasn't a problem for him.

This!

You might not have seen a specific quote, but I can assure you JJ was told. He was told during his official visit back in December and he was cool with it. Competition has never scared this kid. We could have taken a class full of 28 QB's, and I don't think it would have phased him.

That's what makes him a winner. It's also what I love about Sherion Jones. The Jones/Jennings behind the scene battle would be fun to watch. You talk about two kids that will push each other.

Do you know that Butch didn't tell both EEs that they were gonna sign a third QB? Certainly didn't appear to be a secret to those of us following UT recruiting as early as mid December.

What do you mean that Kendall has an issue with what he's been told? Do you know what he's been told, nearly a full year before NSD? I don't blame Kendall for taking visits at all since we didn't have 3 QB commits for the 2015 class when he verbaled to UT last year. Doesn't mean he's been lied to or treated in some unethical manner.

Will continue to say...if a kid knows he's the best? Why is three more difficult than two?

He knows all of that. He has just got this thing now where he stirs everybody's koolaid up and if someone bites he gets a good twenty post back and forth where he says the same thing twenty times. Don't take the bait for the sake of all of those that have him ignored.

I've read quotes per the recruits. Then random posters have "claimed" this recruit knew this and that recruit knew that. Oddly enough, no quotes EVER provided. There is a reason I've stuck to my opinion on this discussion and it's due to lack of support to back up the "claims".

As for Kendall, he said Butch told him he was THE ONLY QB being taken in 2016. After Kendall committed Butch has continued to offer QBs. Kendall was said to be "looking around" per Fort. Fort said is was part my the Debord situation and partly because UT added Jones to the 2015 class(3QBs).

With Butch's history, any QB would be wise to be very careful when trusting what he says. Imo, Kendall now sees this. Right or wrong, IMO it's reasonable.

But I thought when recruits say that Butch told them they were the only one or are the #1 guy, that they are just lying? So Kendall obviously is lying just like other recruits have right?

This place is really turning into Groundhog Day. How many times can the exact same argument play out?

Apparently as many times as the pretend wizard behind the curtain can pull some posters' strings. The rest of us need to oskie to identify ourselves and talk around it until the rest get the message.

I can't believe some of the nonsense on VN about CBJ lying to recruits. Once we were down to 1 scholarship QB, all the recruits knew that we needed 3 in the 2015 class and 1 in the 2016 class. If I had to guess, it was just frustrating that we needed so many in one class. As for Kendall, nothing has changed for him. He would RS in year 1, get snaps in year 2, and realistically compete for a starting job in year 3 as a RS Soph. Either it works for him or not. CBJ will continue to recruit each and every position hard until the final class is signed. That's the nature of the business. Kids change their minds and you need to be ready to respond.
