Official Global Warming thread (merged)

The linked article is primarily about coal which is not the business of BP/Shell/Exxon. To the extent they have coal reserves the shift just moves them to other parts of their product portfolio. Much of the "leave in the ground" for gas and oil are in areas that are not likely part of their (or a major part) of their portfolios. (China, ME)

In effect, they could support this since it will impact their competitors' reserves much more than theirs and still be making the right business decision.

Regardless of the true level of danger from FF use, we are hurtling rapidly towards assuming the danger is catastrophic. As a result, these companies are trying to manage the trajectory.
Bold is gold.

I think you’d be surprised just how much those O&G companies operate on other continents. I don’t understand the rationale behind giving up trillions in assets because “it will impact their competitor’s reserves more”. That still hurts, a lot. If climate change were actually a hoax, why would these companies go along with it? Wouldn't they be better off exposing the conspiracy?

Now I imagine Bart has the scoop on Dr. Essex. What was he involved with, tobacco? DDT? jet contrails?
He isn’t directly involved in any science denial other than his climate hobby as far as I can tell. However, he is affiliated with anti-environmental ultra-libertarian thinktanks that shilled for tobacco and the like (Fraser Institute, Heartland Institute, CATO institute).

Y’all know you can google your sources beforehand, right? It would save some of you a lot of embarrassment.

Deeper Ties to Corporate Cash for Doubtful Climate Researcher

Yup, looks like Willie Soon might finally get canned.

On a side note, I’ve finally gotten around to reading Merchants of Doubt (mentioned in the article). It really is a fantastically thorough and well-documented book for anyone interested in the sociopolitical history of the climate debate and science denial in general. It features a number of characters who pop up in this thread (notably Fred Singer, SandVol’s favorite). For the less booky type, Merchants of Doubt was also released as a documentary last year and should be available on DVD (& hopefully Netflix) soon.

EDIT: Oops, didn't see trout's link. Well now it's posted thrice

Be sure to check out March's National Geographic. I've seen the cover, and it looks like they're not holding back any punches against the growing trend of Science Denial. From climate change and evolution to anti-vaccines and GMO stuff, it is rampant across the political spectrum these days. We're back to the snake oil salesmen huxters too, with homeopathy and chiropractic being seen as legitimate options of treatment.

US National Weather Service Memphis Tennessee: If the current forecast is accurate through the remainder of Feb, parts of the Mid-South will set records for the coldest Feb in history.
Memphis is on track to make top 10 coldest Feb in history...records back to 1875...140 years.

Thanks for the heads up. I saw an article on the topic by NatGeo earlier this month among a couple recently from that science writer Joel Achenbach.

Why Do Many Reasonable People Doubt Science?
Why we pick and choose which science to believe

Merchants of Doubt only explores the anti-environmental variety, but science denial really is a problem across all spectra. Seattle is bad about the liberal types. We’ve got homeopaths and chiropractors on every block. I found out recently that my bud’s sister-in-law is a raging homeopath -- attended a four year homeopathic “university” and now considers herself a doctor. That poor (unvaccinated) kid…

Sure is hot outside
Despite frigid conditions in the East, U.S. seeing more record warmth this winter

A melting Arctic and weird weather: the plot thickens

We all know if a viable, 100% green, self sustainable energy source was introduced tomorrow it would solve the "global warming" issue. We'd stop drilling fossil fuels and scrap any notion of a carbon tax because it wasn't just a money grab. Then it would be impossible to tax everyone's self sustaining energy source which would be OK and all the oil companies and energy companies would just gracefully call it quits.

When someone accepts DOE grants for climate research, does that make them a lobbyist for big government?

Let's not forget that there are peddlers of falsehood on both sides of this issue.

When the head of the EPA claims Aspen will be the same climate as Amarillo and science writers claim climate change is causing acidification of the ocean (2 recent examples in this thread) why wouldn't people be skeptical of "science".

1000 record lows we either broken or tied last week, which is remarkable b/c we were told snow would be rare and the arctic would be ice free by now

By summer... Libs will say it is hot outside

The sad thing is that just the opposite has gone on throughout this very long thread. Every winter, it's "hurr hurr, look how cold it is. Hurr, snow. Hurr hurr, not ice free."

I don't see much in the way of folks doing the same in the summer. Either way, it's stupid. Acting like anyone ever predicted an ice-free Arctic in February is disingenuous at best. Similarly, most models suggested more extreme winter events would be likely, even with warmer conditions overall. Despite a cold February, that has been the case.

There it is... Cold weather is caused by global warming.

As far as I can tell, the only way you and others can discuss this issue is by constructing straw men. Obviously weather has always existed and will continue to exist. This includes cold and warm events, droughts and floods, etc. You don't seem to get that what the weather is like this week actually doesn't have much bearing on the 30 year climate picture. They're two different scales.

If you would, could you state what it is you would have to see to be convinced climate change is occurring?
