I knew that European Russia had the most population by far (in that nation, and as any stand-alone nation in Europe), but I did not realize that there are only 30 million Russian citizens inhabiting Asian Russia, which, as a stand-alone nation would still be the largest geographically on Earth by far. That has to be a population density of something like .5 or 1 persons per sq km. That's almost Greenland level habitation.

Sorry, I know this is rather useless information, but that just blows my mind.

Looking like we're going to give Siberia a good run for its money here in Knoxville over the next week. I've seen some estimates taking us as low as -7 Wednesday night, although most seem to be between 1 and -3. Looking like tomorrow is going to be an absolute mess. We'll have to make sure we're all good on dry food, water, and heat sources. Our plans to take Russia will have to be put on hold unfortunately.

Well, it got -26 here back in the mid-80s before global warming existed, so it's at least warmed us up some 20 degrees. :p

An interesting read. I found his claims (in the Baltic States section) that the US should 1) drop out of NATO and 2) form new European alliances particularly interesting.

Any thoughts?

I have to be honest, while NATO allows the American military unprecedented access in the Northern Hemisphere (and make of that what you will), I think European countries largely take us for a ride. It's our own fault. I'm not necessarily blaming them. I've not given it a whole lot of thought, but maybe it would be a good thing for the US to leave NATO (effectively ending it, since very few members in it are willing to spend enough money to effectively defend themselves) and forge some new European alliances, namely with Britain, France, Norway (for Arctic and Baltic purposes), Germany, Canada (of course), Italy, and Spain/Portugal. In other words, something that looks a lot more like original NATO.

Edit: Turkey, while a good military asset, is so fundamentally different from us (much more in common with Russia) that I don't think they're worth keeping. I doubt they'd even act upon an Article 5 invocation in the event of a war with Russia anyhow.

Looks like we're in for another good ole' fashioned Minsk ceasefire.

I wonder how many people will put stock in Minsk III?

All this nonsense ever is is Putin's further attempts to convince the folks back at home, and internationals like Rasputin (well, that's debatable - still not convinced he isn't Russian) and Pacer, to think he's legitimately interested in peace.

As I said many moons ago in this thread, all Russia needs to do is create enough doubt - don't need to prove anything, as neither it nor Ras/Pacer have managed - just need to create enough doubt.

Since he didn't get his way, Putin wants a destabilized Ukraine. Only way to pretend like he actually has some say upon world events.

It's not as difficult these days, because most major countries want to retreat into their shells.

Can someone explain the logic of the ceasefire not applying to Debaltseve, because it's not the "front line"?
