Celebrations to commemorate the end of WWII are usually another hostile period. Ethnic Latvians and Russians pick different days. Russians go with the Soviet holiday commemorating liberation by the USSR. Latvians don't really think highly of that 'liberation'.

You went on a long hiatus from this thread, but I think we've talked before about my wife's father's family, which disappeared after the Red Army "retook" Latvia. Maybe they just found Russia such an appealing place that they never decided to make contact again with other family members, but we assume the Red Army "liberators" murdered them.

By the way, didn't you say something about adopting a child from Latvia or Lithuania? How did that go?

When Putin owns and crafts the message, the people only see what he wants them to. Russians didn't think anything until all the stations showed the same nonsense every night. They blamed the US for MH17. They say the CIA and the US Army is engaging in combat now. They claim hundreds of American soldiers are active in fighting. They claim the homosexual US is burning down Orthodox churches.

Russians by the thousands? No. Not really. The ones that are coming are criminals, guns for hire, and units sent there without the individuals even realizing it. Chechens are showing up because they get to kill people and scream Allahu Akhbar.

No clue about Putin? His actions and words are enough. His own statements convict him. I speak enough Russian to translate word for word. No network spin can hide that. Proud for him to be my leader? No. I'm not into fascism. I value freedom, free speech, assembly rights, free press, religious freedom, and not some nationalistic warmongering propaganda. I appreciate free enterprise. Not a big fan of anti-semitism. I am for any family that wants to adopt a child to do so. I can go on and on.

I know history and I also know Putin is old-school KGB and also a relic of the Cold War and no I would not. I would never be proud of a dictatorial leader and would probably be in jail or out of the country as a political opponent.

My hiatus was rigging elections and setting up my spy cells to overthrow Putin. No, just job duties here and overseas. We did complete our adoption and she has been wonderful. We actually started doing some work with getting some supplies and resources for her former orphanage as well. I'll probably go back this summer for some missions work.

Yeah, right after the "liberation" the NKVD basically went in and arrested any collaborators or those deemed a threat - teachers, pastors, professors, intellectuals, journalists, etc. as well as their family. Entire areas were cleaned out. What they did not get in 1940 were thoroughly cleaned out in 1945. Many were shot. Most wished they had been shot. They all went to the Far East gulags. Only a fraction ever made it back during the 50's. These prisoners were literally worked to death.

There is a great museum in Riga about the occupation. Here is a link to a virtual tour. They have a book that I wish was in electronic format. That would be a good read for you.

Something I'm trying to understand is Rasputin's and your fondness for the man. It's clear that you agree with his politics. Okay, no problem. To each his own. And it's clear that you think him a defender of a free voice. Another thing that is clear is that you two would prefer him as a president of the United States.

Why? Help us understand. He seems really rough around the edges to an untrained Western eye, but maybe there's something I'm missing.

I don't necessarily agree with your apparent religious views or even all of your politics (although we're fairly close on this issue), but sounds like you're a much better man than me. I'm glad the adoption went well. I wish you all the best.

Never denied that but to even compare even slightly to how things work in Russia is laughable. Anything like Drudge, FNC, talk radio, Tea Party, or any marches in DC would never even have a chance in Russia. Putin runs all media. One of the last indy online news sources had to flee to Riga or risk the whole staff being arrested.

We here can hear dissent. We can assemble and protest. We can write our own blogs. We can watch a counter voice. Even those allied with the one in power here can speak out against that person. Try it in Russia and you get a different response. I even had a Russian friend connected with Navalny's party laugh about IRS scrutiny here in the US with Tea Party groups. He said he wished that was the extent of scrutiny there. Jail, seizure of all property, deportation, and even disappearing is just a sample of starting points in Russia.

Well there is a difference between us and Russia. Putin makes the strings, attaches them, and pulls them. He often cuts them as well.

The fourth wave of forced conscription in Ukraine is going very poorly for obvious reasons:

First, everybody who wanted to go already went, and many of them have returned disillusioned, or haven't come back at all. The stories about army service - lack of food, working weapons and vehicles, basic human decency, as well going months on end with one pair of underwear, are all over the internet.

Second, the government has consistently lied to the conscripts, e.g. telling them that they would have to go for three weeks of training, and instead holding them for six months in the trenches. E.g. on May 26th, the president has personally promised 1000 UAH per day to the soldiers, veteran's benefits, and that only volunteers would be sent to the frontlines; in reality, the majority of wounded conscripts can not even prove they've ever served, and none at all have seen the promised money. Now that nobody wants to serve, the president is promising 1000 UAH per day... yet again.

Third, the rapidly deteriorating situation in the country has led to general disillusionment with the "usurpers" in Kiev: the "revolution of decency" brought yet another oligarch to the throne - one that not only failed to sell his businesses as promised, but in fact still runs a huge factory in Lipetsk, Russia; the national currency now costs less than one-third of what it did a year ago, under the "bad" Yanukovich (which makes Ukrainians by far the poorest people in Europe); and Poroshenko's "free travel to EU by 2015" promises have turned out to be lies... for the 8th time... and he simply promised it again!

The people? Wow, this is massive. An entire nation. Shall we play the YouTube challenge? I can get some videos of people in Mariupol (ethnic Russian area mind you) all waving Ukrainian flags and coming out to dig entrenchments against an oncoming Russian invasion. I can show you full buses of ethnic Russians fleeing Debaltseve for Ukraine while empty buses go to Donetsk. Or Russians shelling towns within the Donetsk and Luhansk borders. Want to play that game or not? Is your name Graham by chance?
