Make every decision off your future: your retirement, your TSP, whatever you've got. Be relentless, and sacrifice what's going on now for what will be. Run everything through the filter of "what will this mean when I'm age (xxx) 65 or whatever." Leverage your time in service. The time value of any retirement savings that you have right now will far outweigh any pie-in-the-sky maybe's that you'll get elsewhere.
My guess is that El Paso sucks something fierce, but it will add into your cumulative service record, and in the end, that's what counts.
And when you do separate, get your patootie on down to your local VA and go on their roster. Even if you have "normal" insurance, you just never know when you need some backup. A lot of veterans found this out in 2007 when the economy when down the tubes, and they lost their health insurance. The VA is still the best safety net out there for those who qualify.
From a proud VA employee, thank you for your service, and we look forward to serving you in the future. :hi:
PS: I truly think that El Paso is pretty awful too, but it does beat Afghanistan, I guess.
