You know, as much as I love TN it's hard to say we are second all time in the SEC. By some measures we are (program wins, championships). But we have a losing record head to head with five teams in the conference: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, UGA and Mizzou. We also have at least two fairly extended periods of almost complete national irrelevance over the last 35 years, which other major conference rivals (Bama, UGA, Florida, LSU) just haven't had (early 80's; the last 7 years). Those teams have had down stretches, but not several stretches of multiple years in a row spent outside the top 25.

At our top end, we can be as good as anyone in the conference. As a program though we are capable of falling further down than some of the others.

We need to earn our position back as an elite program. Nobody that isn't wearing orange colored glasses believes we are anymore.
If we're talking all time, we are. Right now, not so much.

LSU had seven losing seasons in the 90's. UF won nothing before Spurrier. All those programs have had down stretches.

Number of SEC Titles. This is what they were talking about.

#1 Alabama 24
#2 Tennessee 13
#3 Georgia 12

Long-time lurker, first time poster.

Jones wants to keep existing system and VQ suggests Jones wants to promote Azzani. Could only mean OC or Co-OC for Azzani. Therefore, Jones may be shopping for a candidate willing to accept that arrangement.

A guy like Norvell may want to bring his own system and not be down with co-oc. These things, not just $1 million price tag, may exclude a guy like him.

If Debord is the guy it would def help the running game and physicality of the OL, which I'm sure Jones has ID'd as a team weakness. A shuffling around inc Debord as TE or OL/co-oc, Azzani as QB/co-oc, Elder as WR/ST (he even coached DB's at Cincy), Mahoney as TE or OL, and Gil as RB/RC could pan out real well.

Continued interviews could be contingency in case some staff member doesn't like the shuffle or Debord goes NFL or could just be due diligence.

I think most Vol fans are just a little guarded about this hire after Clawson and Sunseri, but I believe we are in much more capable hands all around this time.

Well said but this setup will be an absolute dumpster fire IMO.

That's not entirely accurate, though. From 1997-2007, Alabama was unranked 8 years, and ranked 3. From 1982-1990 they were unranked unranked 4 times and raked 5. 97-2007 is close to being outside of national relevance for them.

From 75-82, Florida was unranked 7 times and ranked 1 time. Then they went unranked from 1987-1989. Now they have been ranked one time in the last 5 years.

Georgia finished outside the top 25 from 84-86, and 6 out of 8 years from 89-96. And 3 out of 5 years from from 09-13.

LSU finished out of the top 25 from 74-81, from 89-95, and then 3 out of 5 years from 98-02.

Tennessee finished out of the top 25 from 75-84 and from 2008-2014. But other than those two (admittedly horrible) stretches they haven't finished out of the top 25 more than twice in any 5 year span since 62-66.

Our two worst runs are a little worse than the other teams, but all of us have had a few down stretches, and some of the teams you mentioned have had ones that rivaled ours. More importantly, outside of those two stretches, we might have been the most consistent team in CFB.

Gotcha. By that measure, definitely. It gets trickier when you slice and dice the other data. I went around and around on this a few years back with some folks at work, and us being second all time is not as cut and dry as I used to think.
