'15 MD OT Pat Allen

The Mahoney versus Pittman debate is nearly equaling the Dalton Santos, Vonn Bell, Torrance Gibson, etc., threads. Here's the deal: it is difficult, if not impossible, for anyone outside of the program to clearly evaluate the coaching and recruiting abilities of either coach. The OL this year was pitiful for sure and it is arguable that Pittman remaining on staff would've helped this year with Skipper, etc., being on the team, but that does not demonstrate Pittman was the better coach or recruiter and it does not demonstrate Pittman was the better long term option (although that is a possibility). After all, Pittman had a very talented OL that did not run block well and he also never signed a can't miss, 5* LT, which people are now beating on Mahoney for failing to do. Similarly, this is CBJ's second full recruiting class after the staff tried to salvage the Dooley '13 class. As it stands, the OL class of '15 is pretty darn good and, if we add Allen (which VQ suggests is likely) or St. Louis, this class will be even better. It is hard to argue that a class with Allen/St. Louis, Jack Jones, Boulware, Zach Stewart, ad Chance Hall (who could be a beast since the staff zeroed in on him early and stuck with him through the serious injury) is not one of the best OL classes in the country. Jones played LT in the all-star game and was commended for his performance against the best players in the country. So, he could be a stud LT for UT. We also don't know if Allen is a Vol and whether he is a SEC level LT or if Hall is a SEC level LT. In sum, absent losing Boulware and missing on Allen and St. Louis, UT has a very good OL class. If we add Allen or St. Louis and keep Boulware, there should be no recrimination for the OL recruiting class because it will be one of the best on paper classes in the country. Even if we simply hang on to the OLs committed, it is one of the best classes in the country.

Well said.

Why must we debate over two offensive line coaches? Look at what we have and the improvement that each has made, and also what we have coming into the fold this year. I believe we get pat Allen, and him coupled with Jones are two solid right and left tackles. Be happy with all our coaches because they have been together a long time, and that's something Tennessee needs to stick with. Consistency with coaches staying is a luxury these days. I think Mahoney is an important part of that consistency.

If we add this OT, I think this class could rival last years if not exceed, but we've got to fill this need.

If we add Pat Allen to this class it will exceed last years class on paper that is and will be one of the greatest classes we every sighed on paper that is, i dont care if we are ranked 5th 6th or 7th, we would have filled every need we have.

When you sign the #1 ranked QB and #1 ranked DL class... well that's #1 overall in my book, because games are won by quarterbacks and defensive pass rush and we loaded them up something fierce this cycle.

I'm by no means an expert on offensive lines, but the other thing here: Pittman's style doesn't sound like it would work well with Butch's offense.

Whether Pittman is a better coach than Mahoney is sort of irrelevant. Mahoney's zone blocking schemes have been a cornerstone of Butch's offenses. Always felt like part of Dooley's problem was that he had a bunch of "good" coaches assembled with a complete disregard for how their approaches worked together. It's sort of like assembling a basketball team with 5 guys who are all good shooters, but no one who can pass, run the offense, play defense, or rebound. I think Butch has been very cognizant of how his coaches and players work as a whole.

From the Georgia site:

Allen has been standoffish about his interactions with the new Georgia hire, but there's little denying that having staff in place was going to be key to wooing Allen back to Georgia. Tennessee has made a serious push, and while there's plenty of buzz surrounding the relationship, Sale and company likely have Allen as priority one on their to-do list. For now, Allen is looking around, but don't be too surprised if he's soon "Committed to the G" once again.

As a Vol fan, I find their reasoning encouraging. Yes, he won't talk about the new staff and all the buzz is for Tennessee, but he's the new staff's top priority so he'll commit to Georgia.

So in a nutshell: "Allen has not been interacting well with our new staff, but at least we hired a new staff and we all know that's important. While it appears Allen will commit to Tennessee, I'm somewhat positive coach Sale is still trying. Allen may not be coming here, but he might be coming here"

What a joke. I could have come up with that. I should work for them for some side cash. "Trent Thompson is the best recruit since Herschel!" Money in the bank.

The last part of that uga write up sounds real fanboy like to me. He should be "committed to the G again soon"? If that was the case he would interact with the new staff there lol...Vol Imo.

Why does one of my friends continue to say Allen is headed to Arky or Ole Miss? My friend is a Georgia fan. I keep telling him I have heard nothing about the other two schools that it is either Vol or Dawg. Am I missing something or is he in denial that we are going to steal him?

You can't be "committed to the G, when you are a fit for the T."
