He may have been the best db but that's about it. He wasn't even on the radar toward the end of Oct and he was hyped up to get talk going on what most assumed would be a runaway. Wuerffel hurt Manning more than anyone imo

He wasn't that great of a WR or a punt returner that year, but he was and still is a damn good DB.

1997 offensive stats

5 rushes for 21 yards 1 TD
12 receptions for 238 yards 2 TD
36 punt returns for 301 yards and 1 TD

So he averaged 1 catch per game, and 1 TD every 3 games

Defensive stats

44 tackles, 5 TFL, 1 sack, 8 INT

Just another comical post. Peyton's broken the mold on so many different levels. One of the true greats of all time.

ESPN talking heads had "Manning Fatigue" so they ginned up Woodson to put some interest in the Hiesman race. The idiot sports writers who probably never watched a Tennessee game live fell in line and that's what you get. The NFL kind of settled the issue in the draft making Manning the number 1 overall pick.

Using draft position isn't best measurement. Didn't Woodson go 4th? Not that big of a difference.

the Bowl Alliance NC game was Nebraska vs UT --- Michigan and its players only win things when sports writters are the voters.

Are you trying to suggest Nebraska was better than Michigan? I certainly hope not. Btw, the bowl alliance didn't mean anything. Ap voters and coaches were free to vote for anyone.

Uh.....BCS not being in effect won Michigan that title. Had they matched Nebraska they would have gotten whipped badly.

If UT had beaten Nebraska and Michigan would have been NC in both polls. The only way UT would have been NC would be to win and Michigan lose.

depends on the coaches poll - UT could have jumped UM by winning -- and history will always show that game as the NC game - as you can see from the link. And yes it wasnt the most logical way to crown a NC.

As far as the Article goes, I find it to be verbose on Woodson's "sack" being so impactful to the game that the rules were changed....but 3 paragraphs prior, he speaks of "rule changes" in a negative light, as if not only were the rules changed to favor Offense but Manning personally, then again that P. Manning himself had something to do with it. Good Grief !
Above Poster is CORRECT ! The Award has ben trashed, tarnished, and has become useless since the ESPN/Media machine destroyed it in 1997. IMHO...

You're crazy if you think the coaches would have UT jump Michigan if Michigan and UT both won. Michigan was undefeated and was ranked #1 in the Coaches Poll and was jumped by Nebraska, but only because Nebraska was undefeated and murdered us.

And nobody cares that "history" sees it as the National Championship game, everyone knows the real NC game should have been Michigan vs. Nebraska.

Only went by the hyped NC game of that season and the fact, you never know who a person will vote for. In another thread I posted there were quite a few polls back in the old days, several teams ended up NCs in one or another - It was all mythical, but it is what it is.
