They said the DL is thin, but the players (Henderson and Sawyers) that aren't there have made no impact anyway so it's not THAT bad unless we have another starter go down. On offense the WR position is going to hurt us more losing Croom.

I thought the bowl practices would give us time to heal and by reading the reports it won't be enough. Woefully thin in key spots. Iowa will be a bigger matchup than many imagine just due to depth.

well yeah and to add to your comment, they're a much more senior group, obviously. no one in the country is younger than the vols but the iowa team consists of mainly upper classmen starting. at least that's what I've been reading.

I'm intrigued to know what the offensive gameplan for Iowa is. I know their fans have mentioned that their LBers are very slow and inexperienced. I imagine we'll see some passes over the middle to Pig and screens to Hurd. I think their defense has a lot of the same vulnerabilities that South Carolina's had. Statistically they are better, but it's also Big 10 vs SEC.

I also hope DY gets some work at WR. He tends to make plays at that position, and it would be nice for him to end his career at Tennessee with some productivity on offense.

Please post cliff notes. I cannot view from my work computer. TIA
.

Dormandy was at practice, not in pads. He is enrolled but unclear whether he will be able to get any practice reps during bowl practice.

Hurd, Young and Lane in non contact jerseys. Only 7 WR in white jerseys: Josh Malone, Von Pearson, Pig Howard, Vic Wharton, Jacob Carter, Ryan Jenkins and Johnathon Johnson. Malone had a good day, Pearson and Carter are showing leadership. Carter could get reps in the bowl. Evan Berry was not with the running backs.

Bryant looking good at inside Linebacker, and has really made progress since fall. Saulsberry looks like he may be able to help during the bowl. DL looked thin, with Hendrix gone, and Sawyers, Henderson absent. Maggitt is limited.

Because everything that goes on with these boys isn't Volnations business. (not being smartass about it, so please don't take it that way)

Some things are kept where it should be (inside the camp) unless and until it has to be shared. In addition, always assume that people on these boards are NOT all VOLS, and are trolling from opposing teams. So think about it this way:

1) Tell volnation a player is hurt just because we're nosy as hell

or

2) Tell opposing team we have player at UTK playing injured so they can target him?

Gotta love MZTERRY!
We're all praying for Croomster!

I'm pretty sure Iowa's defense is a lot better than Vanderbilt's, and we didn't exactly light it up against Vandy with the same lack of depth. Malone better step right up.

That's why Hurd is so important for this game. Losing him against Vandy was nearly a disaster.

I do think that Vandy's defense has more speed than Iowa's. Our WRs couldn't get any separation.

No doubt.

I don't. Vandy's d was hot garbage this year. Lucky for them so was our OL.

Vandy's problem on D wasn't necessarily speed. It was players being out of position. A lot of that is due to their switch to the 3-4 and poor coaching. Iowa fans admit that their defense lacks speed in a big way, especially their linebackers.

If we have to do it without Croom, a healthy North, and a healthy Smith, I think we'll have problems on offense. This will be Malone's time to step it up and hopefully Pig will continue to be consistent. Von needs to figure out his routes/ coaches need to find a way to get him the ball more. everyone thought we were deep at WR but the injury list is long. If North and Smith are healthy, I doubt the talent in their backfield comes close to matching up.

If I were the coach, I'd work on throws outside the pocket and run Hurd to the outside to let him show his speed. I'd also just go big with the deep ball early and often if we can get the right one on one match ups. like say a LB and a slot receiver or even just if we can use the element of surprise. Any one of our WRs could look like Amari Cooper on that day if given the chance. just based on sheer talent differential alone, any one of our WRs should be able to out run, catch against, and beat their backfield. just got to go to those guys and let em do what they came to tennessee to do.

What I assume we will do: try and fail to establish the run which will be laughable because its not like iowa hasnt done well against really great RBs with decent OLs. we'll also probably run Dobbs way too much. yeah im sure there will be some slant routes too. we'll probably run a very conservative offense.

we'll be running the offense that doesnt take into account the players we have and isnt adjusted based on the other team because that's bajakian's style. for bajakian to be really successful in the way that he runs an offense, he would have to have absolute super stars and a perfect offensive line. basically he's not going to beat you with strategy or scheme or game plan. only way he is going to beat you is if his team is just immensely more talented.

well, that's if history repeats itself.

bowl games could be different since he's got longer to plan and less distractions with recruiting, etc. but the injuries might kill us here.

I have this weird feeling that a few SR's that haven't done much over the last couple years will make big impacts in the bowl game as their final bow as a Vol.

Devrin Young
Jacob Carter
Traverris Saulsberry (If he hangs it up after this year)
Brendan Downs
Ect.

Would be a nice parting gift to the program for them to make impacts on our first bowl victory in 7 years.

It might be something you ate.

Prayers for successful surgery and recovery for Jason Croom. Don't want him rushed back though - want him strong and healthy so he can dominate. He'll need some good TLC and eats from his momma first. He really took a big step forward the second half of the season.

Iowa's defense is slow as hell. Sure the statistics for them look OK but go look at who they have played.

northern iowa
Ball state
Illinois
Purdue
Northwestern
Iowa state
Pitt
Minnesota is solid but they throw For about 100 yards a game lol
I mean you gotta take some of their ranking with a grain of salt. Go watch the tape. They are disciplined but hey struggle with athletic teams and any type of speed on the edges.
