My expectation for a coach getting 4 million/year has us in the playoff or on the verge.

He's probably going to get it though.

Then we'll be just like UK-- overcompensating based on fear. Risky strategy.

It will set up unrealistic expectations. If he makes $4M, he'll be expected to keep up with the big boys next year; if he fails, either people will want him gone or he'll get frustrated and leave.

This is a slippery slope that Universities are entering. Coaches salaries are getting ridiculous. NFL teams have a few 7 million dollar coaches and revenue for the league is astronomically higher than that of college programs. One bad hire (in our case 2) can cripple a program for years due to buyouts.

You and I agreed on buyouts as well. I say pay him whatever just give us the luxury to peace out with out a triple mortgage. Butch is putting recruits on the field and asses in seats 4 mill would be high but it's not out of hand.

@ChrisVernonShow: Been told the Liberty Bowl requested in-order - Tenn, Ark, LSU. now up to SEC. opponent will be Texas or West Virginia

Yes sir!!! Bring them on! Can't wait to see our defense. Hope we get matched up with West Virginia. Sutton versus White is my type of matchup to watch.

Maybe it depends on perspective....

Do you decide pay based on results?

Do you decide pay based on the job/how hard you work at it?

Volatil you said you would place UT in the 10-20 range, closer to 20....I assume that's mainly based on the talent base in-state, which is on the upswing btw....

But wouldn't that go to prove how awesome of a job Butch is doing and how hard he is working? I doubt not many if any coach in the country works as hard and puts in as many hours as he does....

So what do you base your pay on?

We need results (Wins) to justify paying someone 4 million per IMO. I know he is working his butt off. Part of the reason I put us probably in the 12-15 range of programs is because we have to recruit nationally. Programs such as Florida can get in a car and visit 90% of their recruits.

If he were to win 9 games next year, pay the man. I'm just not a fan of paying a guy 4 million that is going to complete his second season with WAIT FOR IT......

THE SAME RECORD AS DOOLEY after his second year.

But would you kick yourself if he went to UM for a difference of 500k? I would. Past that don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.

Nailed it. Your last sentence is the bottom line. He is doing what he was hired to do so far. Maybe he hasn't won yet bet that's the next step. We honestly cannot lose him if we want to take that next step right now so he is in a good position to ask for more.

Me either but I can't justify any of these coaching salaries being what they are. Let's face it much of what we invest in CFB is completely unjustified as a whole.

That's true. But CBJ keeps preaching to the fans about patience and the process, so he needs to practice what he preaches. UT has been more than fair, and he's well-compensated. Recruit well and win next year, and the big money will come. If he can't be patient and follow the process, then he'll lose credibility. A raise, yes; an extra mil, no. JMO.

This.

He knew and accepted the challenge of what our program had become. Please don't get me wrong, he has done a great job in building that foundation.

Totally agree. I won't even like it if he gets 4million. But I wouldn't be shocked or too pissed. Agree with everyone saying expectations will shoot to the moon.

Maybe 250 to 500 raise with a step for performance next year? Another 100 for 8 wins, 250 for 9, another 500 for 10 or more?
Seems more fair to all parties.

This. I was composing an almost identical post. There are many different types of logic that go into how much each individual school will pay its coach. It's not just win/losses, all-time rank of the program, geographic location, etc. It's a unique combination of all those things, and more, that each school has to weigh out.

OK, think about this. What if we play WVU in the Liberty Bowl? Their O can put up points quickly, and we didn't end the season playing our best. If we bump CBJ to $4M, expectations skyrocket. Say he loses the bowl game, then turns around and doesn't bring in a Top 5 or even a Top 10 recruiting class-- both of which could happen and neither would be earth-shattering, but there would be a lot of unhappy people. We need to manage expectations right now, and $4M is a different league with higher stakes.

I think it would be fair to bump his base a little and get him to $4M with escalators based on performance. Win a bowl game, bring in a Top 5 recruiting class, boost APR by X%, etc. and hit your number. People won't complain if good things are happening, but things will sour quickly if a big bump is followed by unfulfilled expectations.
