Michigan Contacted CBJ per FootballScoop (merged)

I saw that on a facebook article earlier. He claimed to "know" who it was and said that it wasn't anyone who had been talked about even on chatboards.

Of the people not being talked about... Pinkel would make some sense but his age could be an issue. He's 62 though he seems younger. Who else who is currently coaching has Michigan ties but has not been talked about?

One of the guys mentioned, but very rarely, is Mark Stoops. From Ohio, knows the Big Can't Count.

Coaching is a brutal business and it is easy to see why he would consider other options. VN is a prime example of how many are not willing to endure the process necessary to return UT to a football power. At some point, I'm sure it would seem to be a futile effort when all is going as planned and you are already hearing discontent in the background.

Do you really think it would be different at Michigan... and there he starts from scratch? Jones is smart enough to know that any job worth having comes with expectations and impatient fans. If he wants a patient fan base then he can get a job somewhere like Duke.... and he knows that.

Listening to Reed Caringer from RTI on 101.3 (Cleveland). Says Michigan did reach out to Butch in October. Also said that Butch has reached back out to them. He was unsure of when that occurred (possibly immediately after or in November). Him and radio host have both heard from multiple sources that Michigan is his dream job and that this MIGHT be the one and only college job he would consider leaving Tennessee for.

Several things. Reed believes that odds are Butch stays at Tennessee and leverages this into a raise. But he brings up an interesting point that there were many times in post game interviews that you could see the pressure getting to Butch and him getting defensive. He thinks the one thing that could cause him to consider UM would be it is much easier to to win there combined with the fact that is where he is from.

In other words, he will most likely be back, but the folks who believe there is no chance this happens are fooling themselves.

Agree with all points taken..

Forget worrying about whether Butch will go to UM when he hasn't even been offered. Worry about whether McElwaine will come after Gillespie and Thig. It could cost us serious coin to keep them.

This has as much truth to it as the Gruden to UT rumors nothing more than made up bs. I don't know CBJ but I do know a couple power brokers and he may very well be a compulsive liar. I can tell you that there is a lot of displeasure with both basketball programs at the moment. Hart and Cheek would both be in trouble if Jones were to walk away. He is very well liked on the hill and by former players.

If he gets offered (or if he already has), you likely will not hear anything about it unless he accepts.

If those two were to jump that would be a serious indication that CBJ is headed elsewhere, probably not if just Gillespie left but if Thig were to go with him it would be concerning. There is very good chemistry on this staff.

#1 I am the boss here and perhaps that gives me a little bit of perspective concerning the ebb and flow of success.
You are the boss where? Dollar General?

I know plenty about the "ebb and flow" of success and also that you look deeper than the surface to know whether it is ebb and flow or a trend. Fulmer's last 6 years or so weren't an ebb and flow. They were a trend.... downward. The 2005 took most of us by surprise but it really shouldn't have. If you go back and look at the "fundamental health" of UT's program starting around the departure of Cut... UT was sick and getting sicker. LOTS of problems... all pointing toward a decline.

I realize you thrive on this sort of drama but hopefully Jones stays. If not, what will your opinion be when UT is again rejected by those you deem suitable?
I like drama? Try a mirror next time you are tempted to write that.

I didn't really take sides in this last coaching search or the one before that. It is a lot of drama created mostly by people who have no earthly idea what's happening or who is being talked to. If I think someone is a good candidate I say so (I thought Strong would be good for UT). If I think someone is a bad candidate I say so. And some of the really stupid stuff I try to avoid (the Gruden debates).

What is "suitable" is a championship caliber coach. Volnation should expect nothing less to go with its first class support and facilities. We should tolerate nothing less from the AD. But those guys can come from just about anywhere. Some come as known quantities. Some seemingly come out of nowhere. Oregon's string of guys you've never heard of until they win 12 games is pretty impressive in that regard.

FWIW, I do not want Jones gone. I don't think it would be the end of the world like some. I also do not think it would be good for UT. The BEST option for UT is for him to start performing in the 3rd component (gameday coaching) and become a championship caliber coach in the SEC. I believe that outside of the OL he has demonstrated that he can develop players. He has proven he can recruit. The ability to coach at a high SEC level is the part still in question. Embedded in that is the ability to surround himself with SEC caliber coaches.

I believe there is a lot more truth to this than you would like to believe. Michigan (like UT) is the type of job when they contact you, you at least listen. Especially a guy who (according to what Reed was saying) grew up a UM fan. And they have deeper pockets than we do. One of the ten largest endowments of any college in the US.

I know Butch has said he's not leaving, but who really puts stock into that? Seriously? Has a
Coach ever said anything besides that before bolting?

However, I agree with Reed that this most likely translates into a raise and extension for Butch. But I also didn't think there was a chance in hell Lane would leave for USC.

Great point

I think it'll be Dana Holgorsen, just because that'd be really really funny.

But I guess that's the exact same kind of funny it wouldn't be if it were Butch.

Kiffin going to USC was not silly and I would have told you the same back then. He is a West Coast guy and was not well liked by the UT administration or boosters. No one foresaw the debacle that was Dooley coming but most knew that if USC offered, Kiffin was gone. There was no loved lost there, just poor timing. CBJ is well liked on the hill and UT knows that it cannot afford another coaching search. Unless UM offers some crazy sum of money, UT will be able to match it.

Not worth your time, he thinks the moon was hung by Butch and Butch tells the sun when to shine.

I don't believe for one second that a guy from MI, with zero ties to the state of TN, believed this was his dream job all along. That's salesmanship at its finest and so many bought it. Now that he's here he may feel that there's not a better place to be, but he didn't honestly feel that way as a kid growing up like he says he did. If someone truly believes that then I want to call on you. I could convince you need my product, even if you don't own a farm (I work in Agricultural sales).

ANOTHER spread guy FROM WVU?

Stove burnt those nerve endings clean off last time?

I agree, it would take a pile of cash. Like close to 5 million per year.

You couldn't sale a life raft to a drowning man, wonder boy. Nor do I think he hung the moon, after all you seem to "know" a lot about very few things. I do think he is the right man for this job.

Meh, I mean I guess if you offered any of us close to 3 million dollars to do our job, it would be a dream job.

Gillespie and Thig are not part of the Cincy Six. The chemistry might be good, but these two don't have the history and family ties with Butch that his core group has. Gillespie and Thig have moved around a lot. A strong offer from a solid program could sway one or both of them, IMO.

If Michigan went after butch seriously I could see it going either way. I think butch is happy here and is a fit with the culture but he also is from Michigan. Its a major program and a lot easier to meet expectations. I see him being prideful and sticking with the rebuild here. I do think he would be down Michigan's list.
