SMILE RT @slmandel: McElwain being described as a Saban disciple but he actually spent longer under John L. Smith at Louisville & MSU.

Some Bama people I know are scared McElwain will raid the UA staff and bring them on at UF because he was apparently really liked during his time in Tuscaloosa. Could this be Lance Thompson's shot at DC? What about Kevin Steele?

If Kevin Steele will bring that same defense that he had play against West Virginia in the Orange bowl, then I'll allow it!

Nebraska seems to have frost bite to the brain. UF got a solid triple and don't kid yourself thinking he is not. They'll spend a ton on him and will be married to him for about 8 years but he'll do ok.

would love to see a former Bama position coach be an unproven DC in a new team.. Exhibit 1-Vols circa 2012

I don't know who all is on that staff, but he won't raid the top assistants (money and already on solid ground). Saban has shown that he can hire almost anyone, and they will continue to roll.

Sunseri, imo.

I think we've said this every year since 2010, but next year really IS our best chance to beat UF in years.

IMO, we will actually have a talent advantage for the first time in....ever, maybe. Getting them early in the season is actually a good thing as well. Hopefully there are some growing pains with McElwain's system.

To your comment about the talent advantage. It certainly has been a long time since UT out-recruit Florida for a four year stretch.

EDIT FOR CLARITY: Each data point is the trailing four year Rivals recruiting average.

I think with them losing a lot of players, we may have a slight edge heading into next year's matchup.

Depressing

It might be, but it is also understandable.

Recruiting appears tied to the demographics within roughly a half days drive of campus. That is the talent pool that will make up the majority of the roster. There is a strong advantage for Gainesville there.

The good news is that Tennessee talent from Jackson east is increasing substantially, and UT is re-establishing its historically strong connection to the Charlotte and Atlanta areas. A UT recruiter, due to the talent pool around Knoxville, will naturally have to work harder to recruit than one in Gainesville or Athens. That is why, even if the on field results are slower to improve than many would like, Butch is an almost invaluable commodity to date, at least in my view.

Check this one out:

You could look at this chart alone and predict which SEC team likely wins championships over the past few years.

If you will remind me after NSD, I will build both team's rosters accounting for attrition, talent, and years in program for comparison.

Depending on how Florida and UT finish this year on the recruiting trail, the pre-attrition gap could close substantially.

I like your style.

There should be a thread just for stats nerds who like football.

I spent a couple years wading through the mucky-muck on the dark side (FF) with this stuff, trying to talk some sense to them...

That was depressing.

I figure you guys would like this much better.

Can't really talk sense into the rabble in the FF. Common sense just isn't their thing.

Those charts look strange considering we had a top 5ish class last year. It doesn't seem to account for that on the chart. Of course I never was much of a chart reader.

Sabans hires aee rediculously good....Wouldn't surprise me if Jon gruden is his qb coach one day
