I'm not scared of Jim McElwain. The only decent head coach to come from Saban's coaching tree is Jimbo and he was the "coach in waiting" at FSU for 3-4 years. Will JMc be able to recruit? Florida recruits itself to some degree so they will have high rated classes but so did Muschamp. In the end, McElwain may be an outstanding hire but I don't think he is a slam dunk, guarantee championship caliber coach. Last time I checked he left Bama and they still kept winning titles...so its not like he was the reason for their success.

One thing I keep thinking about in regards to McElwain's hiring is that when UF doesn't seem to get a "homerun hire" (i.e. Spurrier and Meyer) they kill it, but when everyone thinks they hired a "can't miss prospect" (i.e. Muschamp) they fall on their face.

I hope Foley has hitched his wagon to a very expensive donkey and not a thoroughbred.

At this point, I think we have a coach that is good enough and a high level recruiter that even if Florida is good we can be good too. There was a time when both TN and UF were VERY VERY good. A good Florida doesn't mean a bad TN.

Meyer was absolutely a home run hire. Some were skeptical if his offense would work in the SEC but he was very sought after. I remember ND going after him hard that same season.

The skepticism about his offense working and his ability to recruit were the two main things hanging over his head when he was hired. I remember ND going after him, but I also remember several people saying his success and BCS win was just against inferior competition (i.e. a smaller conference and a sub par Pitt team)

really thought Nebraska would hire their former QB Scott Frost...but Riley has been highly thought of for years. He keeps Oregon State competitive and has NFL experience. Not a bad hire at all...seems to be a consummate professional which is the opposite of what they had in Pelini

Former Tennessee commit Lawrence Lee was arrested yesterday and charged with two felony counts of burglary.

Looks like we dodged a bullet with this one

Agreed. I think they went for the safer hire. IMO, Frost could have ended up a much better hire. I have always liked Riley though.

Husker fans are having a major meltdown over this hire.

There's nothing about Riley's resume that makes me think he will win more games than Pelini. Plus, he's 61 years old.

I think Nebraska's days as a dominant program are over...unless they struck gold with some young up and coming Saban type. However, Tom Osborne had his best years there late in his career. I see no reason to think Riley can't win the Big 10 a time or two during his time there.

So we have:
UF - Mcelwain(sp?butwhoreallygivesa****)
Nebraska- Riley
Michigan - TBA

So who do we think is going to be the winner of silly season 2k14?

If you can win games in Corvallis, OR you can win just about anywhere!! Not a "splash" hire by Nebraska, but it could have been much worse IMO

Goes to show you that coaching hires even at big-time football schools has changed. It is very difficult to get a big-time coach to move. I think the hire is fine, but I agree that he may not win more than Pelini on a regular basis.

nebraska seems like they knew the replacement before they fired Bo which was smart.

will be interesting to see if mcelwain can put together a semblance of a recruiting class. he's got some time and UF's got the resources but they are far behind right now.

Mike Riley seems like a terrible hire.

He's never had this much talent base in his collegiate career...did remarkably well at his alma mater but there's a reason that this is the second time he's dumping them.

IIRC he was the last candidate to decline the ISC job before they settled for Kiffin.
