UT DL Derek Barnett had one of the most impressive regular season performances by a UT defensive player in the last several years.
The dominant, true freshman defensive-end finished the regular season as one of the top defensive statistical leaders in both the SEC and the NCAA.
Barnett completed his freshman season by recording 69 tackles, 20.5 TFL, & 10 sacks.
Barnett's 69 tackles placed him tied for 4th on UT's team. His tackle total was also good for 25th place in the SEC & was the 2nd highest total of any freshman in the conference (Nigel Bowden-Vanderbilt-78).
Barnett excelled most at disrupting his opponents' backfield & notching tackles behind the LOS. The DE recorded a team best 20.5 tackles for loss during his true freshman year. That total placed Barnett 1st (tied with Missouri DE Shane Ray) in the SEC for most TFL this season, while also placing him with the 3rd highest TFL total in the entire NCAA. Barnett finished the season with the most TFL by a freshman in the SEC & the NCAA. The next closest TFL totals by freshmen were 13.5 by OSU LB Darron Lee & 12.5 by Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett.
Barnett also finished with the 2nd most sacks on UT's defense this season with 10 (Curt Maggitt-11). Barnett's regular season sack total was the 4th highest in the SEC & tied for the 13th highest in the NCAA. Barnett finished the season with the 2nd most QB sacks by a freshman in the SEC & the NCAA (Myles Garrett-Texas A&M-11).
