'15 MD OT Pat Allen

I'm not calling for Mahoney's head, nor am I blaming Butch for bringing his guys here, but as a head coach, it's your job to make an accurate, unbiased assessment of your coaching staff. Mahoney has never coached at a power 5 school before. He has zero NFL coaching experience. He hasn't coached any higher level of competition beyond Cincy. Pittman was a more proven OL coach, and our players really liked him. Pittman and Jay were the two coaches that deserved spots on this staff. Jay left, and we made a solid replacement. Can the same be said for Mahoney at this point? Probably not. His recruiting of OTs has to get better. We need some bigger guys to compete in our LT/RT spots.

Well said.

Everyone knew the OL was going to be a weak link coming into the season. Not many OLs start two true freshmen let alone replace the whole line from the prior year. Pass protection in 2010-2011 was pretty darn bad when we started Stone, James, etc. up front as true freshmen. Just trying to add perspective.

Bama has started a true freshman at left tackle all season.

Yep LT's like that grow in trees. They are starting as true freshman all over college football?!?! Or is your point that Alabama must have a great OL coach since he is successful as a true freshman. The kid is simply a stud LT. Very rare. Ole Miss kid is another example. They would be great even if I was their OL coach.

It's crazy to think of the revolving door that has been our offensive line.

3 different LTs
2 different RGs
2 different Cs
3 different RTs

The only constant I think was Robertson, a frosh who started all 12 games. That is unheard of!!! No continuity for these guys to refine their craft and particularly with the same guy lined up next to them.

Not to mention some guys playing out of position anyway. Damn it's amazing any of our QB are standing on both legs right now.

I did when someone asked. Could not find them for 2012.

8 in 2013

42 this year.

Edit. Looks like the OL gave up 7 sacks in 2012. Gave up 18 sacks in 2011.

It was 16 in 2013,not 8. I saw the website you were looking at, their setup was to show on January 2013 the 2012 stats, it made it look like the 2013 season.

This is a better stat website

Yet, we won 6 games with the youngest team playing the hardest schedule. Someone was doing some coaching this year, that's for sure. :salute:

I can agree with all this but another thing that causes me to take pause is the line didn't seem to progress at all this year.

The line didn't get to play a whole game together! We started loosing players in the 1st game. I understand what your sayin, and would agree with ya if the entire OL would have played together more than 2 quarters of football. Our starting rotation changed more than some people change underwear. Not to mention how guys was asked (forced) to play in several different positions than what they were accustomed to playin. Good, true depth at each position should result in improvements. If they still can't gel then we have a problem. The jury is still out on Mahoney with me. I'm actually proud of them overcoming the obstacles n making it work to get us to the post season. That is nothing more than determination and heart. IMO

I'd probably be content if the OL could just block the guy in front of them. I'm not greedy. Just avoid whiffing on blocks and allowing free rushers in the backfield. 12 games in and it's still happens all the time. Young? Ok. Need more experience? Ok. Need to gel? Ok. Playing at OT when they should be at OG? Ok.

Too much to ask or expect them to just block a guy? Ok.

I think that is part of the problem. If you cant get the top guys to come, you better be a great coach. So far, Mahoney doesn't seem like he can do either.

Apparently it's a hard concept for many to follow.

The development is my biggest concern. The recruiting I can live with as IMO other coaches can help with that. Of course if recruits see UT OL kids not progressing, it becomes a recruiting concern if the recruits don't think a coach can make them better. A lot of guys on the OL this year getting their 1st serious work. As I have said I expected some growing pains. I expected to see them give up more sacks. My issue is I expected them to get better as the year went on and these "green" guys got more reps in. IMO that has not happened at all.
I think part of their growth issues involves them not being on the field together the whole year. Yet, whiffing on blocks is inexcusable.

When has UT ever gotten the top offensive lineman in the country?

He didn't say land the top OL. He said land some top OL prospects. He doesn't have to be the #1 player in the country, but some more James and Tinys would be nice.

It could also be that a lot of the O-Line recruits have been leaning to other programs instead of Tennessee. Some things like location and family ties to other schools may also be playing into it. If we sign Jones, Boulware and Hall they could be a lot of help and Stewart may turn out to be really good too.

In any other year this years OL class would be pretty good as it stands. Unfortunately due to our deficiencies we need a stellar class this year to meet our needs. These guys could still end up being great and meeting our needs but looking at it from a year out it doesn't seem that way at the moment.

Austin Sanders and Blair were pretty high prospects.

Is your head stuck that far up Kiffin's turd cutter? When you land the #1 OT in the country, it's an expectation that he plays all season. Shall we compare the OTs recruited in last year's class for Bama and UT?

Austin Sanders and Blair were pretty high prospects.

Austin Sanders was a consensus 3 star OT per 247. Ja'Wuan James was a consensus 5 star OT per 247. That's the difference between great o-lines and average o-lines.

Now, Jack Jones on the other hand, is heading in the right direction.

I know this thread went sideways but I really enjoyed the oline measurable discussion. It blows my mind that an inch of height can make such a distinction in predicting ability to play a position at a high level. Sometimes I wonder if this isn't predicated though on a video game measurables mentality. One thing is certain Blair needs to step up big and I agree we will need another Juco maybe next year. We start thinning out in options 2016-2017.

It's honestly more about wingspan than just raw height.
