Agreed. It's important for CBJ to stay on top of things. I don't see a change happening yet either...and I'm not saying there needs to be a change. Yet. I sincerely hope the OL turns things around next year. It's the only weak spot on the field.

Everything you said is 110% true, but the issue is Stewart, Boulware, and Hall are all around 6'4". 247 fudges heights on almost all their evaluations. Yahoo, ESPN, etc all have Boulware and Hall at 6'4". All situations possess some exception to the rule, but stats tell you that most really good LTs are around 6'6". James and Tiny were both 6'6". You need length to play LT effictively.

To put it in percpective:

Kerbs is 6'4" 312 pounds as a RSJr.

Bama's Cam Robinson is 6'6" 323 as a freshman.

Auburn's Shon Coleman is 6'6" 310 as a So.

Arkansas's Dan Skipper is 6"10" 326 as a So.

Flordia's D.J. Humphries is 6'6" 285 as a Jr.

GA's John Theus is 6'6" 313 as a Jr

Ole Miss's Pierce Burton is 6'7" 290 as a Jr

The pattern goes on and on. Almost all these teams have at least 1 other OT in the 2 deep that is also 6'6" or bigger. Length matters. You can be smaller and be an effictive RT, but most the time, you need length to be a good LT.

Jason Peters is the only real anomaly I know of to this LT rule, as he's 6'4".

Gross for the Pathers was also 6'4" and a great LT, but no longer plays.

We've recruited 0 OT in the past two years who could outplay a true freshman center playing out of position at RT. Time to stop blaming Dooley.

Signed or recruited? There is a big difference.

Orlando Brown and Drew Richmond were both recruited.

Is it possible that because of the zone blocking scheme that length is not as important? Just hypothesizing. I have an opinion, but I'll see what you folks think.

They don't wanna hear numbers. Last year's offensive line was average or below average according to these guys. It's silly. Each year we should fire a coach. This year just happens to be Mahoney's turn.

Most zone blocking concepts require the T to "hand the DE" off to the guard and then take on the DT during stunts. To do this, you need to have the length to force the DE inside. The pass rushing DE is always the man priority in zone blocking. This exchange is killing us. We simply can't stop penterating DEs. This is why DE's keep eating us alive and getting sacks. It's also why SLB have been able to get pressure in the B gap. They are simply shooting the gap during the exchange. Striker did this to us a lot when OK wasn't CB blitzing.

C'mon gang. Pittman was a known commodity as an O-line coach before UT. He still is and he is still doing excellent work.

Mahoney - nah. He still isn't a well known O-line coach and is a non-factor as a recruiter. Nice guy though. I don't see Butch changing. I am just waiting for them to play the right guys in the right position. Maybe they will get lucky. If not - more of the same.

Some #'s for ya.

2013 UT rushing was about 2000 yards. 2000 yards passing. Mahoney at OL coach.

2012 UT rushing was about 1800 yards. 4000 yards passing. Pittman at OL coach.

Obviously Arkansas thinks he is a quality OL coach. He is making almost 600,000.00 this year.

This. Good post. Was real apparent during the Mizzou game as well.

The other problem is they have a freshmen RG that if nobody is in front of him he automatically blocks the nearest guy he can find instead of watching for the stunt. He also ducks his head so much he can't see or whiffs. His physicality is not the issue - it's development and experience related.

Those passing numbers reflect more Worley v Bray than lack of coaching. What do you think?
