'15 MD OT Pat Allen

Maybe we should look at him.

If it were me, I would consider other OL coaching options. I doubt CBJ does it this soon though. Probably wait to see how it goes in 2015.

If it looked like the kids playing were getting better, I might be more willing to wait. I just don't see it. I know some use the reasoning, "they are out of position". For me if a kid has not been playing, then ANY live reps/game time SHOULD be leading to improvement and seeing them getting better. JMO

Butch isn't firing any position coaches.

Mahoney lost the entire OL from last season and his best option at RT is a 5th year walk on with a torn ACL. Think about that.

I agree, he has excuses but on the flip side last year's line should have been a strength and it wasn't with several NFL players across the line.

And what I am saying is 2 years in the program, maybe it should not have been his best option. There are about 15 OL kids on the roster. Coaching is suppose to lead to development. If you are not developing the guys on campus, just taking new ones does not always lead to better play.

There was no consistency for those guys. I feel bad for them, honestly. Constant coaching turnover in their entire career, changing schemes, a terrible HC, etc. It's not surprising that many Vols during the Dooley era will have much better pro careers.

But, they excelled with Pittman. Regressed with Mahoney.

I'm not calling for Mahoney to be fired. All I'm saying is we're tossing around a lot of excuses for him.

I thought they were supposed to be better than last years OL...? Somehow

Like many on VN I'm not a coach so anything I say is only guesswork. The O-Line this year has been a disaster because the staff was forced to play so many kids out of position just to field a line. The starters last year played a lot so there wasn't much learning time for the other players to get in. With the extra practices from the bowl game and the S&C in the off season we should get better. Mahoney may not be a good coach (I'm not qualified to make that judgment) but I do think it's unfair to judge him from this seasons work because of all the issues he couldn't control. If the line shows vast improvement next year hopefully those on VN that have condemned him this year will praise him next year.

It does appear that top OT recruits are shying away from TN for the most part. Maybe recruits are questioning the development on the OL as well. I see a lot of fans posting the ? "Why are OTs not jumping at the chance to play here"? Maybe it IS the coaching.

We are recruiting as well as any team in the country at every position on the field except for OL, particularly tackles. Coaching has to have something to do with it. I can assure you other teams are using it against us.

It could also be that a lot of the O-Line recruits have been leaning to other programs instead of Tennessee. Some things like location and family ties to other schools may also be playing into it. If we sign Jones, Boulware and Hall they could be a lot of help and Stewart may turn out to be really good too.

I know of an unemployed coach, who used to be a great OL coach. He also used to do pretty well on the recruiting trail, until he got lazy. Btw, he loves TN! :whistling: :)

Fulmer is too arrogant to take a position coaching job. He probably still thinks a big name program will hire him as head coach.

I'm not sold on Mahoney but he isn't going anywhere. He has been with Butch for a longtime and has done a good job in the past. We simply have a huge void of talent at oline and no fast way of fixing it.

That often happens when you're a senior and the scheme changes.

Look guys, I'm not saying Mahoney is some awesome OL coach. I'm saying two things. 1. He's not getting fired this off season. 2. He didn't have a lot to work with in '14. Disagree? Cool.

This. Good post. At some point, you have to start questioning the coaching IMO. We are recruiting as well, or better, at every position than any other school in the country...except OL--particularly OT. Something is keeping OTs from jumping on board because the OT situation here is beautiful for a recruit. Is it coaching? Is it the product on the field? Is it other schools using the situation against us? I'm sure the answer is a combination of all the above. If the OL play doesn't improve next year, it leaves very little doubt the problem is coaching IMO.

Sorry to derail the whole Pittman v. Mahoney talk, but UGA is making a strong push for this guy...

Chidi Valentine-Okeke

He's a OT prospect who recently moved to GA and reclassified from a 2016 recruit to 2015. Maybe helps us with Allen. Just a thought. I know Allen has already reaffirmed his UGA commitment, but you never know.

Someone asked about the OL coach at Nebraska with the firings today. I looked and he is 34 years old. He played OL at NE. He makes 245,000.00 a year. To compare UT is paying Mahoney 350,000.00 a year. NE has rushed for over 3000 yards in 2014. UT is about 1/2 that. I agree with Ron that a change is just not going to happen at this stage with CBJ so tied to these guys. If it were me, I might look around and gauge some interest.
