Any way you look at this post, it doesn't make sense.

77 doesn't hit 40 at Winston-Salem. You'd have to take 26 way, way, out of the way to hit 85, and the route you spell out above would be at least an hour and a half out of the way, for absolutely no gain whatsoever.

Or maybe I'm just completely confused.

I grew up in Lenoir City, TN, went to college at Carolina and now live a little closer to Greensboro. I'm right by Duke's campus at least once a week. When I was in college we would always go over the day before the Duke-Carolina bball game at Cameron and sneak in to walk around the place. Its got ambiance that's for sure. K-ville and tents is pretty crazy. College football in this area is lacking for sure, but college basketball is AMAZING.

I thought he was a football coach, maybe it's because Steve beat TN everywhere he's gone,WOW spurier was here maybe I can make a lot of money and do like he did. Truly, Cut was the best we've had in a while, Randy you want to come back!:salute:

Spurrier won at duke in the old days, before anyone caught up with his passing offense. Today, duke is deadsville---no one can win there.

The Mountain is much prettier than Duke. Duke has a nice looking campus, but it feels very manufactured. Sewanee's feels like it grew right out of the ground there. And the view from the cross is better than any at Duke.

The Duke campus is very impressive. Gothic architecture. Duke Chapel is an amazing structure

agree about Sewanee. If you see anything at Duke, make it the Chapel, it is impressive.

Just hope Cut doesn't find need to go there too much.

agreed about Sewanee. Sometimes I wish I'd gone to school there when I had the chance.

I seriously considered transferring there so I actually could get some PT in baseball. Then I realized it wasn't worth it.

But I spent several summers there, and it is a scientific fact that every day you spend on the mountain adds 1 year to your life.

Peyton came to UT because of the dominant offensive lines that we used to have. That hasn't been the case in years.

I was going there to play soccer. Was all ready to go and changed my mind at the last minute. Not quite in the same shape to try it again :p

He meant 81, I know he did. I would always leave from Kingsport going to Raleigh so I would go 81 to 77, pick up 52 at Mt. Airy and hit 40 either in Winston or just south of there.

That's the way most people go from Bristol, but if I'm alone, I'll take 421 through Boone just for fun. I should add I drive a Miata.

I remember reading something about Johnny Majors calling Spurrier up after Duke beat UT and asking for some insight into the Spurrier playbook. I guess Johnny didn't know some UF people were in attendance at that UT-Duke game in K'ville and were already looking at hiring Spurrier. Spurrier told him to take a hike (in so many words, as only Spurrier can). I guess he knew he would be using that playbook against UT again real soon.:birgits_giggle:

Speaking of Spurrier, this was kind of funny: Spurrier coached Duke in the All-American bowl in 1989 even though he had already accepted the job at UF. Early in the game some Duke fan was shown on TV holding up a sign that said "Leave the Playbook, Steve!". In the fourth quarter, with Texas Tech well on their way to a beatdown victory over Duke, the guy held up the sign again, but this time he had crossed out "Leave" and written in "Take", and at the end he had added the word "PLEASE!".

BTW, that game was a good example of what can happen when a lame-duck coach stays to coach the old team in a bowl game. Duke was horribly unprepared. I know that might not sound like Spurrier, but it was clearly the case. Even the unis didn't make it to the game. Some of the players had to wear mismatched blue jersies that they scrounged up somewhere. Texas Tech reamed them a new one (something like 49-21, if memory serves). The Duke team that played in that bowl game was nowhere near the same team that beat Clemson and beat down Mack Brown's Tar Heels 41-0.

I doubt it will be this way with Cut. He'll give his best to UT in the bowl game.

Duke is the Vandy of the ACC. In fact, they've been less competitive in the ACC than Vandy has in the SEC. :eek:hmy:

But I'm not convinced Duke can't be resurrected, at least to a degree. From all appearances, the school just hasn't cared about the football program for a very long time. But they had a football "summit" this past spring and made a committment to football. I think part of the motivation is that they're trying to do something positive to make everybody forget about the Lacross-team debacle. The pres and AD have been feeling some serious heat and have a lot riding on improving the football program. They're throwing some really serious money at FB coaches for the first time ever and have a $75 million facilities upgrade in the works.

They may just be fooling themselves, but the committment seems genuine. At least they're backing it up with money. They may not win any championships, but I think they have a shot at regaining some respectability. After all, the ACC is one of the weakest BCS conferences, and Duke doesn't have to play FSU and BC every year because they're in different divisions.:thumbsup:

Time will tell.

Ahh, okay. 81 didn't even enter the picture as I thought the route was starting in Kville.

Anyway, 421 through Boone is a gorgeous drive, as is 91 a.k.a. "The Road to Damascus."
