The "math" doesn't work the same way for everyone. I would be a "blithering idiot" to opt out. So would millions of other people. Being liberal or conservative makes no difference. It's basic math.

As far as means testing, retirees will continue to be a large voting bloc for decades to come. And they are more likely to vote. Retirees will not vote for means testing. That would be a hard uphill battle.

You won't have a vote in the matter. It will be imposed by the government. And you are right, I am mainly talking about folks that have a little while to go before retirement. Millions of other people though... meaning anyone that is more than 10 or 15 years from retirement ARE blithering idiots if they think that money they are "investing" with the government is being "invested" to it's greatest potential. Take the money you pay into Social Security, and put it into a basic no load mutual index fund, and I'll bet ya a steak dinner you would do far far better. And that's without even trying. The government couldn't even get wet if it fell out of a boat.
