It doesn't matter now that the ACA says that you can just pay the yearly fine until you get sick, then you can purchase insurance and not worry about having a pre-existing condition.

If you could do that with auto insurance, the economy would have collapsed by now.

Most states that require auto insurance will allow you to prove you have the ability to pay out of pocket. I wouldn't oppose such an option.
