Because at this moment under the law he is innocent of any crime, just as she is. So why is it fair to afford one more protection than the other. On a side note if he turns out to be guilty, i'll be the first to take up a pitchfork and join the angry mob, but until then they should be treated equally.

Like it or not, she won't be anonymous once charges are brought. If AJ is arrested and goes through general sessions, she will take the stand at a preliminary hearing. If the DA direct presents to the Grand Jury, she still will likely take the stand on pretrail motions. Either way, if the case is prosecuted and AJ persists in his innocence there will be no way she will not take the stand in open court.

Thankfully, in the greatest country in the world, you have a right to confront and cross examine all witnesses offering proof against you. Also, her name will be on any indictment or affidavit charging AJ. There will be no anonymity if the case is pursued.

I don't think so. Deference is getting confused with caring. I don't give a rats behind about players on other teams. Our UT athletes are considered family. A lot of fans are asking the questions, maybe not phrased in the most graceful manner, that anyone would ask if it was a family member in the same situation. Did they commit the crime in question, could this be a farce, is the accuser credible, when will we know something? Yes, we are biased to protect our own, but if it turns out to be a true crime. I imagine everyone here would want them to get the just punishment they deserve by law.

If no charges are brought forward, I hope he and his family go after her in a federal civil case so no matter what state she goes to, they can take her property and garnish her wages.

You want to ruin someone's life with some malicious scheme, you better think twice, and a third for good measure.

It may take over a year to try but the world will know her identity within the next month to 4 months if charges are brought. Since it will be such a big case, I'm sure the DA would start getting a little media exposure in order to poison the prospective jury pool. You would not want to prosecute this case and lose.

Don't you think a large part of the difference is knowing, or knowing of the player in question, and most believe him to have high character. Now at the other school's, we all know the players are in bred trash, so yes we would belie e they done it.

I guess your guilty until proven innocent on here! If they are guilty then do the right thing but if there innocent also do the right thing!

Also interesting how few posts are devoted to Williams' potential innocence. We think the star player is innocent and the less important player must be guilty--but we also generally suspect the woman to be a "vile harpy"/"lying cow"/"scheming female."

It's easy to see, in the evolution of the threads on this board, why so many rapes go unreported.

We have rape shield laws that require anonymity for a rape accuser and that information is exempt from any FOIA type request. If you want the same thing for the accused you just need to get 51% of voters to elect people who will pass a law to keep the identity of suspected rapists confidential until a charge is filed. Good luck with that (not really).

A couple of questions for those who want to keep confidential the identities of subjects of criminal investigations. First, how could the cops seek the public's help in identifying or locating an uncharged suspect? Second, what do you people think the response would be if a suspect reoffends while under investigation and the victim and press find out after the fact?

I think people should be allowed to face their accusers regardless of the case.

I also agree with Vols 74. Accusation is an odd thing to get suspended over.
