Vols finishing in the Top 25

They will most definitely be there if that scenario holds true. Especially if we show out a couple more times.

Nope. And nope.

Only 1 8-5 (not having played in a conference championship game that year) team has finished a season ranked since the FBS went to 12 regular season games in 2006 . Michigan in 2012...in just 1 of the polls.

The polls don't rank you (that year) for a 5-loss season.

I don't think we will be in the top 25 with the given scenario, however, I do think we could beat several of the top 25 teams that will be listed.

This. Won't happen, not with five losses.

If you're saying, though, that UT will end up in one of those early "top 25 teams for next year" or "25 teams to watch next season" that ESPN and SI like to release right after this year's National Championship game is over, then I agree.

Our only chance would be if we blow out Missouri, blow out Vanderbilt, somehow manage to draw a top 25 team in our bowl game and blow them out as well. If we do all that, then we would have a slight chance of getting ranked in the final poll. However, I think that such a scenario is unlikely. While I think we have a decent shot of beating Missouri, we are probably not going to dominate them. We may very well blow out Vanderbilt, but that won't be enough to impress the voters since Vandy is horrible this year. And we probably will draw a team that is not ranked in our bowl game.

Yeah, we'd pretty much have to beat both Missouri and Vanderbilt by 60 points, somehow manage as a 7-5 team to draw a team that's not only top 25, but likely in the top 15 in a bowl matchup, and then proceed to do something like score 80 points on them.

It's extremely unlikely unless there's something like a bizarre, continuous flurry of losses among both the lower ranked and just outside the rankings teams over the next 3-4 weeks of rankings.

I think our young team crumbles Saturday without their leader.

I think we will see the opposite. I think the team will rally together. As for the OP's comment, I don't think we will be ranked this year if we win out. It could land us in the preseason top 25 for next year.

I could see ESPN loving Dobbs if he keeps playing at a high level and they rank them ib their own poll.

I'm not so much concerned about finishing in the top 25 this season as to have the team trending up for next season.

No one remember who finished 21-25 in the polls anyway. Being primed for the next few years is more important, IMO.

Again, if it's their usual "too early top 25 for next year" that they already release the night after the national championship game, totally agree with that; wouldn't be surprised.

Do they use the FPI for anything other than...I guess analytics/statistical breakdowns of teams?
