Don't know the actual stats but it seems like we have been trying to run the Jet Sweep to Pig or Pearson throughout the season with marginal success.

Saturday, I would guess it was run 4+ times with consistently solid gains.

I know SC's D is ranked in the 70s but they are definitely not the worst D we've seen this season yet they still gave up 600+yrds.

Is that sudden improvement a result of the D scheming for a legit mobile QB or was USCjr just slow to contain the sides/not very good?

I'm just hoping we can finally turn the tables and be on the giving instead of the receiving end of a dual threat QB. I still have nightmares from the Auburn game last year!

I'm by no means an expert, but you have to think that the possibility of Dobbs pulling it keeps the ends honest and opens up the possibility for the sweep. If your QB is going to hand it off every time, and you know that, it's easier to string out the runner and drive him out of bounds

SC has a bad defense, but speed is not their issue. Having to defend a jet sweep when there are still two dangerous weapons (Hurd/Dobbs) to account for inside is what is helping the jet sweep success IMO.

Its more about holding the LBs, they are who has to cover the jet sweep. If they don't adjust to follow the jet sweep then it works because of the numbers, USCjr LB was not as strong group noting their tackle leader was out of the game...Jet sweep works...

The QB pulling the ball from the RB is more about the DE, crushing down the line to close the lanes.

seems to gain us yards when we cutback early and when we don't cutback we get hit for lost yards or no gain.

How many of you wanted to body slam your TV on that reverse option to Pig?...until he broke the plane, of course.

Ya know, Worley did the best he could with what he had, which was mostly a tub load of guts and a desire to make the vols a winner. Dobbs has provided this team another dimension that make the defense account for the fact he can run the ball but also gives our offense a knowledge that he is a great play maker and they can score now from anywhere, Go VOLS

The speed sweep is designed to get on the edge quickly. Its success or lack thereof is dependent on two blocks. The Block on the edge and the block by the WR on the db. When we get those two blocks the play works fine. When we don't, we get nothing. It is a very simple play to execute. When we ran it early in the game and lost yards was due to the WR not maintaining his block.

South Carolina is definitely the worst defense we will face this year, but KY and Vandy aren't world-beaters.

Mizzou has shown mixed results.

What blue font?

Blue font is occasionally used to signify sarcasm.

That post was so easily recognized as sarcasm, it needed no blue font.

It was a joke that referred to the crowd of people on here during the off-season that claimed that Hurd is too tall to be a RB and should be switched to TE.

Exactly. And I meant no offense toward you, Bluetic, it's just that your name set up the perfect opportunity for the sarcasm blue font angle.

Go Vols!

It certainly isn't easier to defend when you have to account for the QB running it. Worley was really no threat on that play even if he kept it he would get minimal yardage.

Quiet as it's kept, Pig and North can do a lot of the things Cooper II did (if needed). All it takes is some imagination in the play calling. Pearson is not our best Fly Sweep man, and they need to consider Wharton on one whenever he's in the game.
I do like the direct snap to Hurd 2 or 3 times a game.

Notice how many times the slot came in motion for the jet sweep but didn't get the ball. It is a fundamental part of this offense to run multiple plays out of certain formations. So, when they actually handed off on the JS it was open.

I don't think it has much to do with the QB being able to run, as you can fake it and run the wheel route out of the JS, or just running the draw. I think in this offense the option to fake or hand off is always there, but it was Worley who made this a disaster. Earlier in the year, if the slot went in motion it was almost if not always a handoff.

Bottom line, after watching Dobbs in two games is that Worley just aint very good.
