Robert Meachem... what could have been?

Okay, if I said a LG was third on a depth chart would that also mean he is the third best offensive linemen or would that imply that he is the third best linemen (offense or defense) on the team or would I be implying that he is a Hall of Famer to be?

What exactly is your point other than you misinterpreted mine?
What the hell are you talking about? What does this have to do with offensive linemen? His position is WR. When you say he is listed as the third WR on the Depth Chart you are saying he is the third WR on the depth chart.

And if you are going to use that gay WRR and WRL you might want to say so in the original post. No one does that crap. It is just a way to sort it out and make it look pretty.

Read the second sentence. It talks about a waste. Does that sound like I'm talking about the third WR on an NFL team. I don't think so, but you could interpret that to mean a number of different things. I'm sure of that. Nonetheless, your points at this stage are not material to anything other than your own ego. Move on.

Do you think the Vols would have been better with Meachem this year? Don't you think a playmaker like Meach would have been a great addition to this year's team? That's what I was wondering... and how much better?

Now, go ahead and rewrite it if that's what floats your boat.

Why is it taking meachem SOOOOO long to get used to the NFL..
its not taking any other WR's this long that were drafted in the first few rounds..
what is Meachem not getting exactly.. like specifics????

You gotta remember Meach had been at UT 4 years and was a redshirt junior last year and has a family to support. While it would have help UT a lot if he had stayed it wouldn't have improved his draft status much if any. He did the right thing for his family finacially speaking.

Yea... I agree and understand all that, but it's just kinda a hypothetical.

What difference would one big WR playmaker like Meachem have made on this year's team (ignoring all the valid reasons for him going to the League)?

He had one excellent season at Tennessee. He might be a bust. I hope he isn't, but there have been several WRs taken in the 1st round that flopped. There have also been several that take 2-3 years to get on the field and do things.

Isn't that the norm for WR's who make it in the NFL?

Most of the time yes. Freaks like Moss and Calvin Johnson happen every once in awhile. Then you have the Marques Colston type, the small school guy that explodes.

But most take a year to get adjusted.

I'm not calling Meachem a bust, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Although I understand the financial issue, I wish he could have stayed with us this year to get another year under his belt. He looked awesome on the NFL skills drill catching balls last year (some offseason show he was in).

More game time seems like it could have been good for him, and we certainly needed him badly this year.

Do you think the absense of a Meachem-like playmaker explains why we didn't see the deep ball more?

Yeah to a degree, but Meachem turned a lot of short passes into long TDs. This offense really wasn't much different than in 06, you just had no WRs able to break an arm tackle and take off this season. That's my take on it.

See, I think the difference was that Meach could go long which made DB's lay off more giving him more space to make his moves and break those big ones.

I didn't feel like our current WRs got that same level of respect, partly because they didn't show they could burn the DBs long.

G Jones looks like he's got the skills to be a playmaker, but the others haven't yet shown that flash. They may have it, but he's the WR playmaker next season in my mind.

And I'll add to it with this: Lucas Taylor showed glimpses of it until he got hurt.

Austin Rogers is serviceable. He's not going to break open a game with a huge catch.

Briscoe has suprised me. He's been a lot more consistent than I thought he'd ever be.

Jones will be the next guy that amazes you with what he does after the catch. He'll break ankles.

Ahmad Paige will be the guy that just runs past everybody.

Quintin Hancock is a good possession WR. He's the next Jayson Swain.

Moore will be pretty good before he's through here.

I'm sure Meachem is lamenting his decision to turn professional and actually get paid for his services, as opposed to sitting in Knoxville and getting scholarship to feed his family with.

Agree on Lucas.

More dependability from Rogers would be helpful. He can't keep dropping passes. I wondered if the one he dropped against LSU early got in EA's head too much.

Briscoe.. still watching.

Jones... your point sounds great!

Paige... we need him on the field more then.

Hancock, Rogers, or Briscoe (pick one to play with Jones, Paige, and Taylor)

Moore... agreed. Maybe he takes Taylor or Paige's spot as a starter.

We've got plenty to work with here it seems.

Paige is redshirting and is still a season from being anything more than a 5 snap a game player, unless he blows up this spring.

Jones would have been a starter until he hurt his hammy this summer.

It's not him lamenting it, it's me.:) Just being a selfish fan who noticed his absense this year.

Being overweight and not knowing the playbook just increases my skepticism of any contribution he will make to the Saints.

Being injured in 50% of 4 seasons starts leaning towrds injury prone. It is a small sample size, but it leans to me.

I doubt half of the NFL players meet those standards of not being injury prone.

I cant believe Denarius Moore made the All freshman team.

Meachem would of had a huge year IMO. the way I see it we got a bunch of undersized receivers, we need somebody that can go up for the jump ball and Meachem was the guy for that.

But I dont blame the guy for leaving, he just an old farmer trying to raise a family

other than Calvin Johnson, i havent heard much about any of the WR's picked ahead of Meachem. Are any of them having early success? i believe i saw Jarrett from USC, once on Sportscenter.

Dwayne Bowe (LSU now the Chiefs) is leading all rookie receivers in nearly every category.

That's about it.

Jarrett was drafted after Meachem.
