UT was offered the chance to play VT in Bristol and the speedway, but the school said no because they didn't want to lose any revenue.
nevermind the fact it would be a tough place to hold a football game. And I highly doubt VT said ok with losing a home game either.
I've heard the rumor go both ways. One year UT turned it down and then UT was willing to fit it into the schedule for another year and VT turned it down. I live here and really don't want to see a game at BMS. Seating would suck.
I agree...but I would HATE to play them and us have a bad game....I would never hear the end of it from the VT fans around here, always telling me how VT is superior to UT in everyway..even said the Hokies would dominate the SECE
don't think like that. If UT did struggle against VT it would be a serious sign of decline at Rocky Top. Winning shouldn't be the issue here.
The fact that no one could sit on the track itself so you would be that much further from the field should be an issue though.
Why don't we just play a home and home series with them?
correct. the city of knoxville was against it because of fears that it would remove a weekend of tourism that is created when TN plays a home game. no one wanted to lose the tax revenue that a home game brings to the city and surrounding area. there was pressure from outside the university to not do this. This is incorrect. Hamilton was guaranteed more money from a game at Bristol than a home game at Neyland would generate.
There were/are other influences at work.
I think a home and home would be great. D1 schools schedule patsies not just because they are a should-win game, but because of the extra money they make for home games. Most schools make so much money in the patsy games that they are able to pay the patsy schools extra so that they don't make it a home and home. That's why UT won't be playing at Arky St. anytime soon.
However, we have scheduled home and home series with quality teams, UCLA coming up, Nebraska and Oregon in the future. I see no reason not to start a "border" rivalry with VT.

Yeah, the thing I hear consistently around the country is, "Our 75,000-80,000 are louder than your 105,000." Sometimes, unfortunately, it is true. It's really evident at road and neutral site games. We usually outnumber, but we rarely out-yell.
on a side note, do you ever attend any W & M games? I'm very excited about the CAA's decision to push football. Will definitely be in attendance for ODU's first home game in '09.
