Steve Spurrier on call-in show: 'I'm not a very good coach now'
Steve Spurriers not happy with what has transpired this season at preseason Eastern Division favorite South Carolina.
Crippled by the SECs worst defense, the Gamecocks (3-3) are no longer ranked and have squandered double-digit leads in the fourth quarter of consecutive games, both losses.
The Head Ball Coach was particularly candid with listeners during Wednesdays weekly call-in show during the bye week.
People always say, What do you think when the fans *****? and I always say, They should ***** about the way we are performing. I am embarrassed at times with the way we play, Spurrier told host Todd Ellis.
Frustrated with his teams performance, Spurrier suggested that he may have overestimated this seasons talent level and said it would be up to the players, not the coaching staff, to turn it around.
Hell, I was a pretty good coach a couple years ago, Spurrier said at one point. Im not a very good coach now.
Often chipper during three straight 11-win seasons, his job hasnt been as fun this fall. South Carolinas last losing season came in 2003, two years before Spurriers arrival.
Im not going to turn it around the players are going to have to turn it around, Spurrier said. We coach as hard as we can all the time. We are trying everything we can to put the best players on the field and put them in the best position.
