Questions/Information for those attending the SECCG in Atlanta

Ok...I think you are missing my sarcasm here.

My point is this:

Why would you come to Atlanta and then go stay way outside of town? Midtown will be HOPPING Saturday night. Tons of fun. Why miss out on that by staying way the heck up at the Perimeter by all the mini-malls?

If you are going to come enjoy a weekend in Atlanta, then I say stay in actual Atlanta. Every city has a mall, a Cheesecake Factory and a Best Buy. Enjoy what this city has to offer near downtown/midtown.

Thats the real Atlanta....not the Perimeter.

just my .02

All of which you can experience without driving a car downtown and sitting in traffic. Ride MARTA in early. Ride MARTA out late.

Heck, I'd even compromise and drive a car to midtown and catch Marta there down to the Dome. Anything to avoid the traffic around the Dome.

Also, this hotel puts you squarely in between Buckhead/Lenox Mall/Phipps Plaza and Dunwoody/Perimeter Mall.

malls malls malls......geeze.

every city has a dang mall! LMAO.

Go to World of Coke or the High Museum....do something you can only do in Atlanta!

Sarcasm aside, I'm a native Knoxvillian that's been living in the Metro Atlanta area for close to 12 years. I'm trying to pick something that's affordable and safe for a budget-minded East Tennesseean.

Yes, there are nice things to do in Downtown and Midtown. However, the beautiful thing about MARTA and staying in the Dunwoody area is that you can hop on a train to go to Buckhead/Midtown/Downtown/GA Dome, etc and see whatever sights you want to. Plus, you get nicer hotels for less in much safer areas.

I guess it depends on what people are after. If you are making a weekend of it, I agree with you. But I would think that most people are just planning to drive down Saturday morning and then high tail it back Sunday.

haha

If you're coming in early Saturday, you park your car at the hotel, and you dont move it until Sunday morning. No driving in downtown, no sitting in traffic.

It just kills me! If you are coming to visit Atlanta, give your money to businesses in ATL/Fulton County, NOT Marietta or Cobb.

So ridiculous these people who claim ATL and stay up in Cobb or Gwinnett their whole life.

No need to be condescending. We're throwing out options, that's all. At the very least we can all agree that staying in a hotel on Northside Drive is a bad idea?

...and I have never claimed the ATL. I went to school there, but I live in Macon . . . you know, the place 80 miles south with less crime and a thriving water supply. :p

Now your prejudices are coming out. Yes, I live in Cobb County, but did you know:

1.) My wife and I are members of the High
2.) We regularly go to performances at the ASO
3.) My wife goes to musicals at the Fabulous Fox all the time.
4.) We enjoy dining at restaurants intown rather frequently.

So we take advantage of the city, but also live in an area with low crime rates and where houses come with nearly an acre of land. Sounds good to me.

Either would be good, but I think I'd go with Hotlanta's suggestion and go the LaQuinta route since it's so close to MARTA

MARTA is not complicated. There's a North/South line and an East/West line and they meet at a hub called Five Points. The GA Dome stop is either 1 or 2 stops west of 5 Points on the East/West line.

The La Quinta Inn is much closer to several different MARTA stations. Plus, you have 24-hour free parking at the Dunwoody MARTA station.

You'll have to change lines once to the East-West line (as GAVol already mentioned) at Five Points, but you'll be able to follow the crowd of other Vol fans. It's no big deal.

You may have a thriving water supply, but you've got one crazy-ass mayor, for sure. :p

On the streets around CNN center, there are usually hundreds of tickets for this game, at face or lower-since lsu choked against Arkansas--their fans will be dumping a lot of tickets.

I have no prejudices in regards to ATL.

I am originally from Nashville, and the very minute I can afford to move back to TN I am outta here like the Braves playoff hopes.

I am merely saying that if you are coming to visit Atlanta, in my opinion it would be way more fun to actually stay in the city proper.

I live in Grant Park and it's great. Personally, when I decided to move to Atlanta, I knew that I wanted to live in town, not in burbs. I'm sure my situation is different than you guys.... I am 29, engaged, and not planning on buying property in the state of GA. Basically, young and enjoying living in a big city.

To the thread starter:

Enjoy your stay...have fun in Atlanta. Most importantly: GO VOLS!!!!!!

Thankfully he's term limited and will be gone in a matter of a couple of weeks.

Macon has gotten so cosmopolitan that Oprah even came to town last week.

I do not agree. I stayed on Northside at Howell Mill at a motel there for the SECCG in 2004. It was just fine.

right, because it's the citizens of Atlanta's fault that we are in a drought. Nice back handed comment. That one was on par with my very unnecessary (I'll admit it...I'm a man! I'm 29!) Gwinnett/Cobb comment.

Yep, my wife watched that show last week.

Seriously, Oprah should just file for non-profit status and start the Church of O. Her cult-like grip on suburban women is downright scary.

If I had to stay at a Hotel near Northside Drive, I'd check Howell Mill out first, mainly because of the really nice dining scene that's bubbled up over there.

And don't forget more shopping at Atlantic Station. IKEA anyone? :p

FWIW, I know very little about getting around Atlanta and have no issues on Marta. I usually take it from the airport to the closest stop near my sister's house (N. Springs I think) You should be fine.

I've lived in Atlanta for a dozen years. Although I do think MARTA pretty much sucks -- and they've started charging 50 cents for MARTA cards themselves in addition to the fare, so be prepared for that -- it's probably the least miserable way to deal with getting to and from the Dome. Find a place to drink beer for an hour after the game while the traffic dies down some, because it will be a mob immediately afterwards. Maybe not as bad as it was on BART out in Berkeley right after our game, for those of you who were there for that, but you'll definitely want to wander around for awhile before jumping down into the mess. While it IS possible to park downtown on the street in a select few places, as well as a few semi-hidden routes out of the area, I can't recommend it to anyone who isn't familiar with downtown Atlanta. And as GAVol says, taxis are not really a dependable option. I live about three minutes from the Lenox Square MARTA station, so I'll probably just do that myself.

One other thing -- somebody upthread mentioned about going out afterwards. For those of you who are into that sort of thing, forget about Buckhead. If you hadn't heard, that whole area is a construction zone right now and no bars are open. Midtown's your best bet, or Virginia-Highlands, if you have a car.
