I agree. Just looks like a bunch of locals they rounded up to execute, then video type it and put it on the Internet to say to all their fellow *******s, "Look, this is what our glorious fighters have done to defend Islam against the Iraqi military!"

Israel is obviously the bigger problem over there. Islamic extremism isn't more dangerous to muslims, nothing to see here. /sarcasm

Islamic State grabs Iraqi dam, oilfield after defeating Kurds | Reuters

Islamic State fighters seized control of Iraq's biggest dam, an oilfield and three more towns on Sunday after inflicting their first major defeat on Kurdish forces since sweeping through the region in June.

Capture of the Mosul Dam after an offensive of barely 24 hours could give the Sunni militants the ability to flood major Iraqi cities, sharply raising the stakes in their bid to topple Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shi'ite-led government.

Islamic State, which sees Iraq's majority Shi'ites as apostates who deserve to be killed, also seized the Ain Zalah oil field, adding to four others already under their control, and three towns.

The Kurds have always backed our play. This is one of those instances we need to recognize the fact that the nation of Iraq no longer exists and we should be supporting our historical friends and allies in the region. And if that means recognizing the Kurdish Nation for what it is, so be it.

And give them whatever they want to combat ISIS.

I was watching a special on AHC about "Operation Viking Hammer" in the early days of the 2nd Iraq War. Anyhow, they were interviewing American Green Berets who had trained and fought alongside Kurdish forces against al-Qaeda. One of the Green Berets was recounting a particular battle wherein he had a Kurdish machine-gunner shadowing him about. He said at one point that he heard the Kurd next to him just going to town with his LMS. When the Green Beret looked over, he said the Kurd briefly stopped to look at him, then had a big ****-ass grin come across his face and gave the American a big thumbs up, only to continue firing away.

This was all said with actors portraying the event, and I couldn't stop laughing for minutes.

There's a book called Masters of Chaos that talks about the SF guys in Northern Iraq during the initial days of OIF. And I met a couple of the guys that were there as well. Basically with the help of the SF guys on the ground, they held some absurd number of Iraqi troops that were prohibited from moving south to oppose our forces there. 10 Divisions pops into mind, but I can't recall if it was that low.

It's a pretty good book.

Heard on NPR that IS doesn't control the dam, so perhaps some confusion earlier.

Probably too late to do much without a big effort to be honest.

Sounds like we are doing some humanitarian aid via air drops.

I saw that when the crisis was just starting but nothing since then. That said airstrikes will not defeat IS. I think our only play here to realize Iraq as a unified nation-state is lost and recognize Kurdistan and start arming them with modern weaponry so they can take the fight to IS.

Yep - hear the press conf today we keep insisting on Iraq (Baghdad) to "reform" their government to be more inclusive, blah, blah, blah.

Find some people willing to take on ISIS and arm them up. Yeah I know that's how we get in trouble but Iraq (and oil supplies) are about to be in a world of hurt.

On a side note, we justified Libya as preventing the massacre of people not aligned with Col. Quackers. Well, ISIS is killing all over the place and if you are Christian in Iraq you better high tail it out of there but for some reason this killing doesn't merit a response. Any wonder no one knows what our FP is?
