Has received his release from Southern U, and will be eligible to play immediately, has 1 year of eligibility remaining.

6'9" 210lbs forward, averaged 26.9mpg 13.1ppg 8.8rpg and 1.6bpg last season for Southern. Started his career at Iowa State where he played quite a bit as a freshman, but was dismissed from the team following an arrest.

Went to a JUCO for a year it appears and committed to LSU, however couldn't get the grades so didn't enroll and stayed at JUCO another year. Played at Southern this year, and apparently he has graduated so should be eligible this year.

Catch could be that like McKnight, Godfrey has attended 2 four year universities so he will need a SEC waiver, that may scare Tyndall a bit after the McKnight deal.

This guy sounds like a great target. Is he a grad student?

FYI, Rob Lewis says the okie state guy is out because he's an undergrad and only has one year of eligibility. SEC has a rule that says undergrad transfers have to have at least 2 years.

Would be nice. After McKnight being denied, I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Maybe Slime will agree to right a wrong. Not counting on it though.

Good to know on Gaskins, sucks that the SEC has all these wacky rules, seems like a big disadvantage being in our position.

Godfrey is a grad student I believe, best I can tell it appears he was at Iowa State, got dismissed, went JUCO for a year, committed to LSU, couldn't get in academically so went back to JUCO where he redshirted a year, committed to Southern, and now has 1 year of eligibility remaining.

This guys a legit talent, here's his bio after freshman season at Iowa State...

Was Iowa State's top reserve as a true freshman, averaging 5.7 points and 5.4 rebounds...was second on the team in blocks with 27, tying for the fifth-most swats by an Iowa State rookie in school history...led the team in field goal percentage at 55.4 percent, the third-best clip ever by a Cyclone rookie...had five starts and two double-doubles...finished strong, averaging 10.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and shot 63.8 percent (30-47 FG) from the field in the last seven games...grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds vs. Drake, tying for the fourth-best single-game effort by a Cyclone freshman...posted first career double-double vs. Missouri with 13 points and 10 boards...tallied a career-high 23 points (10-11 FG) and grabbed 11 rebounds in Iowa State's win over Colorado...swatted a career-high four shots vs. Colorado in the Big 12 Championship.

Did he actually enroll at LSU? Could be the deciding factor with the SEC commish. Also didn't they change the ruling FOLLOWING McKnight's ruling?

He didn't, signed with LSU, didn't actually get cleared so he didn't attend any classes, however that shouldn't matter. The issue is the same as with McKnight, he attended 2 four year universities already, so he has to have a waiver from the SEC. McKnight was denied, but I have a feeling that's as a result of whatever he did to get kicked off FGCU's team a couple months ago. Godfrey was dismissed from Iowa State 4 years ago, and has since had no reported issues at either JUCO or Southern University, so I would think he would get cleared, but you never know.

As for the rule change, those types of things usually get changed on a yearly basis, so I assume it wouldn't go into effect until after the 2014-2015 season had ended.

Espn scouting report from 2009

April, 2009: Godfrey is an athletic finisher with great upside. He runs the floor every time and keeps pressure on the opposing teams post players. Godfrey dunks with power and through contact around the rim. He works to seal his man in the low post and can step out to about 15 feet. Godfrey is a tough match up because he can score over smaller post with his ability to elevate over the top and with an less mobile but taller opponent his can take them off the dribble and get to the basket. He also can make an above the rim highlight from drop off passes created by guard penetration. On the defensive end he is a terrific shot blocker. Godfrey can block shots on or away from the ball with great timing and he has the awareness to keep the ball inbounds to possibly start a fast break opportunity. This mobile forward must continue to add strength but is a tough competitor around the rim.

In 2009, when I worked as a sportswriter in Minneapolis, I received a tip about a nationally ranked prospect who’d just moved from Milwaukee to the Twin Cities. A local AAU coach identified him as Calvin Godfrey, a 6-foot-8 power forward with high-level athleticism and power.

It didn’t take long for the Godfrey buzz to grow. He hadn’t even found a high school and fans wondered if Minnesota’s Tubby Smith would sign him.

But Godfrey has had various academic and disciplinary issues in recent years.

He eventually signed with Iowa State after a strong senior year. But an arrest for drug possession led to his dismissal. Violations of multiple team rules resulted in a midseason suspension the same year. Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg said the arrest was Godfrey’s “final straw.”

From what I have been able to find he hasn't had any run-ins for the past 4 years since his dismissal from Iowa State, he was 18 and made some dumb decisions, maybe he has matured?

Could very well be and I'm confident that we'd do some thorough due diligence before actively courting him. He certainly appears to be the kind of player who could be a major contributor if he's really turned himself around.

Sounds similar to McKnight, accept for the arrest.

I think it's worth a shot, definitely one of the best big guys available. If we have any shot of getting him, we have to pursue. Having Godfrey is the difference from having a mediocre season to a not-so mediocre season.

“@Tim_Fontenault: Just heard about Southern forward Calvin Godfrey possibly transferring to UConn. If he has his act together...he averaged 8.8 reb./game.”
