'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Coming from a single parent household that was in the just above poverty level income, that much easier said than done. :hi:

In this situation today, between the Hope and Pell grants (neither of which are loans to be repaid) such an "in-state" student would attend UT cost free with extra money to cover part of housing and food. It amazes me how folks view the room and board part same as tuition. You have to eat and have shelter whether or not you attend college.

Absolutely. However, the question here isn't about staying eligible at UT, but at JUCO. JUCO's are notorious for their lack of academic help & especially poor communication with athletes on what they need credit-wise to become eligible. Could student athletes do a better job putting emphasis on the student half of things? They certainly could and should. But a lot of the time, teachers, coaches, handlers, friends, and even family have been letting these guys limp through academically without any kind of repercussion.

These guys are 17-20 year olds. Once bad habits are created, it is very difficult to break. Couple that with a "god complex", learning disability, bad mentoring, and a 40+ hour physically taxing schedule, and you have a nasty situation especially if they aren't the brightest or most academically inclined individual. Stop looking at the situation through such a narrow perspective. Often it's more than just "try harder, care more, blah blah rah rah".

The Juco I went to has an amazing support system. People work fulltime and go to school. They do just fine. Those are all excuses.

There are a lot of judgmental people on here...or mental people that judge. Everyone is different, every situation is different. CW may wonder why some of you guys are soft and pudgy, or can't dunk a basketball, or can't please a lady.

No matter the differences, students have to hit a basic standard before they can go to college. If you can't hit that standard, you don't deserve a college education.
Athletes should not be an exception. This is why we have some huge problems in the NCAA.

People are complaining about how they don't get a proper education.

So your solution is to ridicule this particular person on the internet? He may have a undiagnosed learning disability, no one knows, but to spout off all of these absolutes is very ignorant. Regardless of your level of education, you come across as an ignorant and close minded individual. How about coming up with some solutions instead of the usual "I did it why can't he? drivel.

Oh, yeah man! Because you went to a JUCO with a good (your definition of good) academic support system, they must all be good. :eek:k:

I will spare you the lecture but this statement is riddled with fallacy.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed and hope he gets in. Wasn't CP down to the wire with his enrollment? CW might be a difference maker in us having a losing season and us going bowling. He's that important to this class.

Honestly at this point I think Bates or Bryant will be in a better position to contribute than Wheatherd. They've had a whole summer of supervised conditioning and learning the playbook.

He should of worked harder in school. That's a solution. What's wrong with saying it the way it is?

I really hope he makes it in, but feeling sorry for him won't solve jack. It's up to the individual to seek the right kind of help.

He could always go play in the AFL or semipro. That's a solution.

Or maybe you could shut your pie hole and keep your uninformed and ignorant opinions to yourself. That is also a solution. You know everything that comes into your feeble little mind, does not need to go out through mouth. It's called decorum, civility...the golden rule even. How would you feel if people ridiculed you when your Viagra didn't kick in...you would feel real small wouldn't you? :cray:

Lol! Most people have haters. You can either choose to use that as an excuse to go cry, or you can win. I live on a planet called earth where there are winners and losers. I also live in a state where almost everyone has a disability. You can't use a disability as a crutch to cater to people who are mentally deficient.

You guys are just making excuses that others have kicked to the curb. When we stop making excuses for these kids, we can provide them a real useful education.

Did mommy teach you how to personally attack people? Grow up man. Btw, I had a mental disability and beat it. You don't know me at all. I'd whip your sorry ass for your comment.

Maybe I believe in not limiting people because of a label. Weatherd can do anything he wants if he puts his mind to it.

It is what it is. These kids know what they need to do to qualify. It's not some big surprise. They can either choose to buckle down and get it done, or they can miss the opportunity. If your having trouble, get help. If you don't, it's on you. I just can't feel bad for someone who can't meet the "minimum" requirement.

Maybe it's all blown way out of proportion and CW is going to make it in. I honestly hope he does. He was signed to fill a void in the defense right away. The spot is his as long as he did what he needed to do.
