The Numbers Thread

what are our realistic chances of Jones landing one of the remaining 5* guys on our target list?

I suppose that depends on what site your looking at. If your using the 247 composite a lot of people have decided to go with, I'd say Williams(committed) and McKenzie is it as of today. That's of course not guessing if any of our commitments were to get bumped to a 5*.

Swafford counts as well, so with those 6 we will have 25.

That's the "if they could get to 25" I was talking about. I have seen some say Swafford counts and others say he doesn't.

I thought 6 spots left IF they are willing to over sign by 8, was where we were.

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous.

There should be no "IMO/JMO" required, because it's obvious it's already an opinion.

Meh. Don't be sorry. You're opinion. :)

It's not easy to tell when it's someone's opinion. OCI did this kind of thing constantly. He occasionally brought some 'inside' information. He would also mix-in a few posts with his opinion and pass them off as fact (many times inadvertently). Several other posters asked him to use an IMO/JMO so we could differentiate between his insider posts and pure opinion.

TIFWIW JMO :hi:

Edit: Tux is clearly passing off his opinion as fact. Read his posts. He KNOWS he's right.

Since we all like to laugh at Vandy whenever possible, I just realized CBJ and UTs staff has more offers out(20 more) to 2016 recruits than Vandy does to 2015 recruits.

We all know Tux thinks highly of himself, but that doesn't change the fact it's his opinion. Whether he likes it or not, it's still his opinion.

Get ready to get pissed LV, Freak posted a link to FL sports radio in which Butch said " we will sign a full class this year" which to me implies 24-25.

Let the debate

With them now showing that over signing is something they would do, I kind of figured 24 was possible. Can't say I like the risks involved, but it's their decision.

Why are some assuming we are going to over sign?

I see it as a very strong possibility as currently the # is 16 and yet we have 18 commitments. Could we lose 2 kids soon? Sure. In about 15 days it will be 3 over. If the staff is willing to take commitments now for more spots than they have, I am conceding they would probably do the same on NSD. As OddFuture mentioned, taking 24(what seems to be the max this year) would put us over signing by up to 8.

I hate to say it, but for Butch & Company to continue at this pace some housecleaning is in order. Brick by brick and back to the top are nice little saying's but I think some will get left in the dust.

It's inevitable and it's already happened/happening.

I almost guarantee we get an extra spot from Pig declaring for the draft this year as well.

Had not though about that. Good point though. With his troubles, it might make sense he would call it quits after this year. I do think it would be a pretty big risk though as his troubles would be seen as red flags to NFL GMs. Not sure if w/out the troubles he is a 4th-5th RD pick. Figure in the issues and he may not be drafted. Another year at UT to show he has things all in order may be needed.

It's just another Dooley recruit that does this. Think Bray, Sentimore, Tiny. All undrafted, all Dooley recruits, all declared early, none really that interested in academics. Not being interested in academics is the big part. Bray would rather see how many cars he could hit with beer bottles, Sentimore flunked out, and Tiny barely got in to college. Pig fits that mold perfectly and could be a late round pick/undrafted but he's ready to move on. I expect a smaller role this year anyways.

Trying to think of another player like this but there's none off the top of my head. Probably 1-2 floating around. I could see Jackson on the OL potentially rising draft boards and being a top 3 round pick and leaving.

EDIT: even CP is a good example. He was all in on his one year as he flunked out too.

Trying to be positive about Pig. Perhaps with him being challenged not just by CBJ, but also by his team mates, he will grow into someone we don't expect this fall. He certainly has the physical attributes.

Which is why I like what Butch is doing in bringing in kids that are solid character kids and solid students in the classroom. It's another added benefit of getting kids who are EE's. Can't do that if you're not a hard worker in the classroom.

PLUS, if you're a strong student, and you don't pan out on the football field, you still have plenty of options, and most will award you academic scholarships to go with it. This makes it easier to oversign and part ways if you need to.

I know we have poked a bit of fun at Vandy for it's "offers" they have handed out in 2015. I read something on their board earlier about it.

The fans there claim that DM won't extend an offer to ANY recruit unless he feels very sure that Vandy would be in his top group and a very possible chance of getting the kid to commit. DM will never just throw out offers "like other SEC coaches do". He feels it is better to offer only those kids he stands a good chance to get.

Plenty more of Dooley's kids who in my opinion were never worthy of a scholarship on an SEC team.

I'm sure Butch could close his eyes and pick seven or eight kids to toss from the team.

In reality, CBJ has taken some kids that I have no doubt the same folks screaming "BOOM" today and talking about how under rated they are, will be calling for them to be "dropped" in 12-18 months to make room for the next group of *'s.

There were a couple of what I call "head scratchers" in our list of commitments. You are right that they could be recruited over or asked to 'gray shirt" should our numbers tighten up more and we find ourselves in the mix for some players at positions of need.

If we land Van Jefferson, we will likely have sewn up recruiting of all Wrs, as we have likely done with the RBs and QBs. Then we have to move on to other positions of need.

I would suspect that if anyone is asked to grays shirt, it would be in favor of picking up some more linebackers, cornerbacks, defensive linemen, and offensive linemen. We are not deep at all at those positions.

I honestly hope IF CBJ approaches any of our current commits with a GS option, they pass. IF CBJ insists, they would be well advised to just walk away and go to their next option. A GS just makes zero sense to me. As a recruit if I am not good enough today coming off your 4th losing season, I really doubt I would be a take in 2015 after your coming off a bowl season.

As much as I love the Vols, I would tell any kid in the situation to walk.

As you stated and in reality, history shows that being "gray shirted" is a nice way of saying to a recruit that you are not good enough. It is just a coach's way to walk out the back door without embarrassing anyone or himself.

IMO that's where Mr. fun LV would lose his mind if I were a recruit or his family. :)

IMO don't take the commitment if your not going to honor it. I don't care who decides they want in late. If I was good enough in June, I am good enough on NSD. If a coach thinks there is even a slight chance a kid could be asked to look around, DON"T take the commitment. How hard is that? Serious question. IF CBJ kept recruiting say Woods or Bruce(2 that are mentioned by fans as possible "drop ems") till January and then told them "if you want to be a Vol, I have a spot for you", what's the chance they pass? If they had committed elsewhere, what's the chance they flip? I'd bet it's pretty high. If you as a coach think you may try to push them out late, just don't take their commitment in June.

Let's see how that works out for him. As mentioned, he only has 5 verbals at present while the trend is to fill up classes early rather than late. Even Bama has 18 recruits right now, in June, which is unheard of for them. Mason does have 1 4* among the 5 though, kid's supposed to be a really good player.
