IRS admits to targeting Conservative groups

I'd be interested to know what happened to the automatic backups that have been a part of the govt's record retention policy for more than 15 years.

There is no way that a single computer crash should be anything more than a mild inconvenience when it comes to producing emails.

That's a valid question. Most emails go through an office server. Should be imaged somewhere.

I'm with you on what the emails could possibly show. This timeframe is before the targeting ramped up. At most they could shine light on the info being sent to the FBI, but I doubt much would come of that anyway.

But this is another instance of thr baffling fact that our government can't seem to pull off the simplest stuff. Backing up emails is stuff everyone has been doing for years.

I don't believe for one second that the emails are gone.

The facts left out of that conservative blog version of the story include that it was her computer that crashed, that it happened in 2011, before this was even news, that they sent it to the FBI to try to recover it, that they did go to and recover emails from other irs computers whenever she copied anybody else, that 250 employees have been working to comply with these requests, that 67,000 of her emails have been recovered and provided, among a total of 750,000 documents provided, and it has cost $10 million.

So you can read all the spin garbage and phony outrage you'd like. I just post the above so you can give it some context.

Battered person syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Getting rid of emails on government systems can be the hardest thing ever. They don't just belong on a particular computer. They're not missing in the sense that's being portrayed. It's too convenient for only specific time frames to particular agencies just happen to have vanished in thin air. They may be "Gone" in the sense they're portraying now, but it's not because of a computer crash years ago. They've either been moved or intentionally wiped.

Since we are talking about leaving out facts - why leave out the fact that the IRS is just now informing Congress about this computer crash?

The IRS told investigators in a letter Friday that it was unable to produce many of Lerner's emails from January 2009 to April 2011 because her computer "crashed" in mid-2011. It said it was able to recover thousands of other messages from the computers of other IRS workers who'd been copied on those emails.

I'm mean they've been "working" to find the emails for quite some time.

Shouldn't this have been stated from the beginning?

I will go w/intentionally wiped or just plain lying again. It's amazing how powerful the IRS is. They demand every person to save their documents & receipts & to have them available on hand when the IRS wants to do an audit. The IRS should be forthcoming & stop hiding sh!t (facts) and come clean from being such A**holes.

What some have already shown:

1. The WH narrative that this was a rogue operation out of Cincinnati has been debunked

2. Correspondence with other agency about sharing information that the IRS is not supposed to share (criminal violations)

3. Correspondence with Democratic law makers demanding investigations into and information about various right-leaning 501c3 and 4 organizations.

The fact that the emails to DoJ, FEC, WH and Democratic law makers are the ones that are not recoverable is quite curious indeed.

Better yet some current/former members of the IRS should go to jail

The GOP narrative that it was politically motivated has been debunked.

In the investigation? Come on.

3. Correspondence with Democratic law makers demanding investigations into and information about various right-leaning 501c3 and 4 organizations.

Exaggerate much ?

On the last one, that's clever on your part. You make it sound like only emails to those agencies are unrecoverable. In fact, all from that time period are. Not just those.

More lies from this administration. It's run like the mafia.

Takes a heaping dose of ignorant to believe these emails just disappeared.

It's hard to do this in a regular company so I assume the govt is similar. There are backups on top of backups and even off-site storage. If they're gone is because someone made sure it happened.

There is no accountability in DC. None

You know, I find something absolutely hilarious LG.

I keep bringing up the fact that not all of the facts are known in most of the scandals and you continually scoff and make the counter claims its the GOP doing it for fundraising or partisan attacks or to discredit Obama, racist, whatever your current reasoning of the day is.

Yet we now have positive proof that not all the information was had in this IRS case. And someone I hope you don't see this as being coincidental that it just so happened that a central figure in the IRS targeting scandal (yeah, it's a scandal) just so happened to lose emails from the time period they were investigating and just so happens said emails could paint a damning picture. No coincidence there whatsoever. Yeah, the Nixon tapes were accidentally erased as well. Just like new data on the Benghazi situation is coming to light as well. And Fast and Furious is being covered up.

When are you finally going to wake up and see that this Administration is the most corrupt in history? And they will stop at nothing to conceal the truth, deceive the public as well as the proper Congressional oversight and do everything in their power to keep anything from hitting the highest levels of power.

If senior level officials in this Administration are doing it to protect Obama and he doesn't know about it, he's completely inept and shouldn't be in the position to make choices in this country as well as being completely out of control of his Cabinet.

If he does know, he's far worse than Nixon ever dreamed of being and impeachment should be going forward.

Neither situation poses an acceptable situation to the American people. And I really don't know why you persist in thinking this is all GOP conceived propaganda when the same thing keeps popping up time and time again.

As much as I loathe the big government spendaholics in DC, at the least I know exactly what I am getting when it's a liberal politician. I hold a special degree of disdain for the Republicans who are willing accomplices (or active leaders) in the furthering the cause of a centralized leviathan.

Why won't someone who supposedly favors smaller government will not use this IRS targeting issue to push a flat rate/head tax that is sent in on a postcard is beyond my reasoning. Tax the corrupting power away from all of the politicians regardless of party.

End rant.

How do you deal with the fact that her computer crashed in 2011, well PRIOR to it even being an issue. I'd be much more willing to believe shenanigans if it happened recently.

How far back does the IRS targeting go? Seems like it goes all the way back to 2010 from a brief search of the matter.

So what exactly is missing from the picture here? And furthermore, why do you avoid the question I posed in that fact it's far more convenient that her computer "crashed" and yet not one shred of evidence exists on any government server or system back up or anything of the matter?

I think you of all people should know how well the government keeps up with documentation in both electronic and paper form.

I'm not saying it isn't worthy of criticism. I am saying it has to be placed in context. The evidence has already been overwhelming that this was apolitical, and that even the GOP supervisor okayed it in an effort to deal with an explosion of groups trying to abuse the exemption.

Dumb? Sure.

Malevolent? Seems unlikely given all the circumstances.

Sometimes you say things that I cannot coherently respond to with other than a WTF...

Exactly how was this apolitical again?

The use of political labels to do searches does not equal doing it out of dislike for a given political viewpoint. It was a mechanism of expediency.
