Bo Pelini saying he thinks signing day should be eliminated and when a school "offers" a kid, the kid should be allowed to sign right then. He feels it would slow down the recruiting process for the kids and help eliminate a lot of the "stuff" that goes on in recruiting. He is not a fan of seeing schools throw out hundreds of offers to kids they would not actually take. Interesting stuff.

I love this idea!

No more than they do now I wouldn't think

I agree. I don't think it would be much different than it is now. If the kid signs in July, he knows it's no different than if he signed in Feb.

Bo did say IF there was a coaching change a kid would have an out. Would make for some pretty wild recruiting if a coach were fired. Donnie T just had a crazy month trying to fill UT's BB class as quick as he could. Imagine trying to sign 20-25 kids last minute?

I don't like this idea at all. Recruiting is a process. Kids need to see different schools. They need time to make decisions. I like the idea of only commitable offers.

It could still be a process. Kids could still see different schools. They could take all the time they need. It's all up to the recruit on IF he signs and when. Yes, I agree the pressure on visits would be amped up as schools know getting that signature means it's a done deal, but that is where the parents come in. If the kid does not have the self control to be sure before he signs, can't say I'd feel sorry for him.

What happens if a kid signs in July blows out his knees in September. Offer still good?

I think there needs to be an early signing period. I'm not a fan of signing anytime on the spot.

Of course. Much like our staff did with Paulk, injuries happen and are part of playing football.

Guess I'm looking at it from the kids perspective and y'all are looking from the schools side.

It would be nice to lock a kid up and not have Auburn pad their pockets the day before signing day.

I'm actually liking the idea from the kids perspective. As a recruit I would want to know 100% that IF a school were to offer me, I could make that decision and commit. There would be no slow play concerns. As a recruit if I was not ready to sign and wanted to go through the process, I then know that that offer could no longer be good if I waited and the position filled up for that school. Recruits would be more inclined to visit their favorite schools 1st to secure their spot IF they had an offer.

The rule would be catastrophic for any program losing their head coach.

Kids can get out, but many of the top players have signed already, leaving the school with scraps.

On second thought, no thanks

While not perfect, the system works as it is right now. Creating one or modifying this one to the point where offers can be rescinded if a 16, 17, or 18 year old kid doesn't sign paperwork that alters the next four to five years, possibly their rest of their lives, sounds to me like less of a choice and more of an ultimatum.

How would it be any different than schools offering but not actually willing to accept the commitment/sign the kid? If an offer is extended then rescinded IF the kid wants to look elsewhere, to me that is better than meaningless offers.

Watching some College Football Live. They were talking about some teams that were "straying from success." They were looking at UT, Miami, USCw, and I think Stanford. They said they thought that Tennessee and USCw would both be back very soon. Andre Ware threw in "Tennessee needs a quarterback. Bad." Just thought it was interesting!

They were 14th today in Rivals.

They were 10th yesterday and we were 11th. They had a WR decommit so they fell and we moved up to 10th. I think the WR decommit was because they took a stud WR transfer from Washington who Petersen sent packing due to a run-in with the law (assault). Seems his QB was a broncos fan and he, the WR was a seahawks fan. The night of the superbowl they got into it and it got serious, arrests and suspensions. Petersen reinstated the QB recently but not the WR. hence the transfer. Moral of this story is Petersen is probably a broncos fan too. :)

"Signing" a player and "offering" a player are two different things.

Undoubtedly, shady recruiting practices happen and they screw kids over, but that's not what I'm talking about here.

Forcing a kid to sign papers or else...?

That's not a decision, it's a shakedown.

I have to believe that ESPN is ready for UT to be good again. Knoxville is one of the biggest sports markets in the country. The city is a huge cash cow for ESPN, and ratings will only increase when we're actually good again and they can promote the hell out of us on the air.

It's the recruits decision. His kneecaps are not going to be broken if he decides to wait. Worse case scenario, someone else takes his spot. That is something that happens everyday in recruiting now.

I really thought Danny O would show out this spring and be ready to blow up this season.. Hoping he'll contribute big this fall. We need it.

I don't mean to argue but I think our starting defense destroys our offense or at least it did in the last scrimmage before the O&W game. We spent the spring trying to build an offense and it looked good against the #2 defense but then Chattanooga would look good against our #2 defense (hyperbole). We deliberately put on an offensive show in the O&W game to entertain the 68,500 fans. It was consistently reported throughout spring practice based on our offensive performance against our starting defense the QBs would be running for their lives the whole season. Our issue on defense is depth. On offense it's subpar QB play and an as yet incohesive offensive line. We have 29 practices ahead of us before the first game. We'll add a lot of talent to the depth issue on defense but on offense we're pretty much hoping for improvement with what we already have.

How would that be different than if a coach leaves now?

It would be different in that now if a coach is fired, the new coach can still flip recruits from other schools. IF Bo's idea was in place that new coach would have a much smaller pool of players to pick from as a lot of the kids in the class are now "signed" earlier and therefore off the table.

A huh I see now. I don't think that's a reason against the rule though. If a kid wants to sign, he should be allowed to sign at any time during his senior year. No reason to make them wait if school and player are willing.

As long as the grades/qualifying test score are in order I'd be fine with allowing kids to sign during their SR year. I can see where it would benefit recruits as they know where they stand and see where it would benefit coaches as they could focus on other kids/position needs as their class was locked in much earlier.

Sorry Doc. Difference of opinion. I evaluate on relevant stats, not "we should win every game, no matter what." Type of emotion. Sometimes, I think we may get an upset beforehand, but no, I don't think we win every game. That is insanity to me

Of course, I show up every game (across the globe) excited, and hoping for the best.

No need to be sorry my friend.
Nick, text, email, etc cannot impart emotion. I reread my post and it came across as offended and harsh...definitely not the case.

I have to do my job on relevant stats and be realistic...Volunteer Football is pure emotion and enjoyment for me.

As a senior at UT, went to the Sugar Bowl when UT played Miami. Greatest fan experience ever. No one gave those Vols a chance...it was beautiful with the final score UT 35 Miami 7
Miami fans were everywher and obnoxious pregame...could not find any after the game. :)

Insanity at its best is being a University of Tennessee Volunteer :hi:

But thats just ole asinine insane me LOL :)

I don't know if it would slow down for the kids. I think pressure would really mount at visits. How many college kids sign up for horrible credit cards because you give them a free t-shirt. I can see slimy coaches like Lane Kiffin putting massive amounts of pressure on visiting recruits. Think about how many of those visits take place without a parent even present. Then there's the Nevin Shapiro Miami stuff that goes on. He had recruits partying on a yacht. Get them drunk make them sign.

Cannot sign until 7-10days after a visit. Cool down period so to speak.
