"Undefeated or gtfo" ~ everyone in the FF

I actually think the FF is far more negative than the recruiting forum right now. But really, I think we have a healthy blend of optimists and pessimists in both forums.

I just wish both sides could live and let live a little more instead of basically calling one another idiots for whichever side they take. Nothing wrong with being a sunshine pumping optimist (that's just part of being a fan) or being a down in the doldrums 'nattering nabob of negativity' as the old saying goes (that's a justifiable position given what we've been through).

Yet, all too often rather than making a reasonable argument for or against a positive or negative outlook on the season/position/player/whatever, which might actually be productive and a lot of fun, people just end up lecturing others on how they should feel which is a futile endeavor, imo.

Sunshiners gon' pump sunshine and rain dancers gon' bring the rain. Or something like that. :)

Since it's a bit slow right now and I don't recall anyone mentioning this when it happened apparently a giant sinkhole (40ft deep) opened up on Austin Peay's football field not long ago and according to a June 2 report has been growing! To make matters worse, their stadium was undergoing renovations. I can't imagine what it's going to cost them now.

A lot of people don't realize it but Thompson-Boling had to deal with sinkholes when it was under construction and yes, even Neyland has sinkhole issues as does much of campus (during our artificial turf era the way things drained caused some issues that UT had to monitor constantly.) And while we still monitor it and are fortunate to have top of the line resources/experts/academics to keep an eye on things, the move to grass stabilized the ground and sinkhole issues.

I hope folks are helping out Peay. What a terrible thing to have happen (luckily no one was hurt because workers spotted it early).

Anyhoo here's a pic:

Also:

The hole was discovered more than a month ago and originally measured fewer than 5 feet across and 4 feet deep, but as workers kept digging to find the bottom, it expanded to more than 75 feet at its widest point, and an estimated 40 feet deep.

Austin Peay sinkhole brings national attention

Good post. Not sure if anyone saw on the national news about the big sinkhole opening up in a display room at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, but it was some wild stuff. The crazy thing is that I was there with my family just a month earlier. Walked right over where the sinkhole opened up and everything and you never would have guessed something like that would happen, but what do you know, just a month later...

I read a couple articles about this back when it was first reported and fortunately AP DID have funds in the budget for sinkholes since they have had trouble with them in the past. So they where prepared for this.

I like a reasonable argument.

Why the DLine may be better than expected and why it may not be so good.

Okay, I'm on a computer now. Let's start with the dramatis personae, shall we??

Returning Players:

54 Jordan Williams - Senior
96 Trevarris Saulsberry - RS Junior
69 Allan Carson - RS Junior
95 Danny O'Brien - RS Sophomore
42 Charles Folger - RS Sophomore
4 LaTroy Lewis - RS Sophomore
89 Jaylen Miller - Sophomore
50 Corey Vereen - Sophomore
39 Kendal Vickers - RS Freshman

Incoming Players:

58 Owen Williams - RS Junior
72 Michael Sawyers - Freshman
52 Joe Henderson - Freshman
40 Dimarya Mixon - Freshman
9 Derek Barnett - Freshman
8 Dewayne Hendrix - Freshman
?? Charles Mosley - Freshman

Okay, here's where the fun begins. Looking at the "returning players" list, my first thought is "holy crap, where's the depth??". Williams has talent, as does Vereen. Behind that (second-tier, if you will).....there's not a lot of "wow" there. This isn't me bashing the players, y'all, I promise you that. O'Brien has HUGE amounts of potential, I seem to remember Lewis getting some praise, and Saulsberry was showing promise before the injury. Carson/Folger/Miller/Vickers, I just don't know about. Carson IIRC can't stay healthy; I have no idea who Folger even is, and the other two are in their second year, so the jury's still kind of out on them. But, as they say......there's another side to the story.

Lads and lasses, I dunno if y'all noticed......but we have one hell of a good recruiting class coming in. There's not a guy on the "incoming" list that I can look at and say "that guy doesn't have the ability/talent to be a starter one day". Maybe one of y'all can, but I can't. We've seen all the videos, we've followed the recruitment, we know (or have a pretty good idea of) what these incoming freshmen are bringing to Rocky Top. We have speed at the DE position with Henderson and Mixon, blunt force trauma with Hendrix and Barnett, and mountains in the middle with Mosley, Williams and Sawyers. I'm excited to see these kids play, as I know the rest of y'all are, too. (*pause for a moment and think of this: 3rd and long with Vereen and Henderson at the ends with Sawyers and Williams clogging the middle*)

But, I digress from the original question/topic. Why might the DL be better than expected?? Look at the talent we have coming in. That talent's going to push what we already have to get better, and if what we have now doesn't get better......they get passed up and get to ride pine. No simpler way of putting it than that.

Why might the DL be worse than expected?? Remember when I said (paraphrasing)"I don't even know who this guy is"?? We're relying on a LOT of freshmen to come in and make an immediate impact. It's something that I can see them doing.....but it's also the SEC. (knock on wood and God forbid) If we hit a rash of injuries, the DL play at UT has the potential to be worse than it was during the tenure of the Italian dude that came over from the Gumps.

My thoughts?? I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, there's not going to be a single redshirt to be had on the DL. The new kids are gonna have to play and play well. However, I think they're talented enough and GOOD enough to do just that, without much of a dropoff from what's already here.

And oh, yeah.......GO BIG ORANGE.

It's the finals to find out the elite 11 so you need more than 11 or there is no point

Ahh, my bad then. Elite 11 finals sounded to me like the championship round. I also figured once they had the "elite 11"(the top 11 QBs as they had determined), they would then hold the "finals" as to rate those guys 1-11. Then you would have your elite 11, and your top QB. :dunno:

Holy heck good post Deus.

"We have speed at the DE position with Henderson and Mixon, blunt force trauma with Hendrix and Barnett, and mountains in the middle with Mosley, Williams and Sawyers."

This is not only awesome IMO its also pretty dang accurate.

I thought Mixon moved to DT during the spring. Also it's my understanding that Robertson will get a shot at DT initially and I actually do think barring a catastrophic run of injuries we will see some redshirts. I also think we could see some more transfers out before the start of fall camp. There's more. Jakob Johnson moved to SDE in the latter part of the spring and Jordan Williams has been sliding inside and splitting reps with O'Brien at 3T. I think Folger is a walk on.

My guess going into fall camp for the preliminary 3 deep DL (recognizing that Maggitt and/or Weatherd (if he makes it in) will replace the SDE on passing downs:

SDE Hendrix, J. Johnson, Barnett
3T O'Brien, J. Williams, Mixon
NT O. Williams, Saulsberry, (Incoming Fr)
WDE Vereen, Henderson, (Lewis?)

I think jaylen miller could be involved.

Involved as in making the 3 deep? or transfer? If he's on the field, which side? SDE or WDE? On the summer roster he's listed at 250. I did notice that he got a bit of experience last year (or at least didn't redshirt) but I'm not familiar with his contributions other than 2 solo tackles against Austin Peay and 1 assist against Oregon. Apparently he didn't play again after the Oregon game. I haven't really been paying attention to him one way or the other and haven't heard anything so this is a serious question.

Y'all are expecting a lot out of true freshmen DL in the SEC; moreover, the players listed above have minimal experience outside of maybe Saulsberry, Williams, and O'Brien. I expect the DL to be the weakest area of our football team this year. I think our pass rush will get better, but I think, overall, DL will be an issue.

Experience holds alot of weight in the SEC. Doesn't change the monstrous attributes these freshmen are bringing.

Not expecting all-sec performances out of em this year but I'm excited as heck we got em.

Did we get a final/official word on Riley?

I know Butch said "he's gone home, we've moved forward".

Some were suggesting a Monday deadline. I never heard a thing from that.

Random question: who is coach Orgeron recruiting for nowadays? Did someone pick him up after he resigned from USC because he got passed over?
