'15 FL QB/WR/DB (anything he wants) Torrance Gibson

"Tennessee OC Mike Bajakian just arrived here at Orlando's Citrus Bowl sporting an orange Vols jacket getting set to watch the Florida High School Athletic Association 5A state title game. 2015 five-star dual-threat QB Torrance Gibson the main reason."

-Luke Stampini

SN: I retract my statement about Bajakian being one of the weak recruiters on this staff. He's literally been all across the country in the last 10 days.

:good!:

So if he has an attitude/leadership issue in HIGH SCHOOL...stands to reason it'll only get better when the pressure and spotlight magnifies sevenfold???

Wow so this is the first time UT has ever recruited a player with some issues? I guess CBJ should just stop recruiting him because a 17 yr old kid messed up in high school. He is obviously Dorial Green Beckham 2.0 and cannot improve his attitude/leadership in his senior season. So we should just pass on him

Sounds like they are saying, "Maybe".

What's wrong with that? At this point we don't know if any elite QBs will be great passers in college. Rosen, Gentry, Waller, Francois, Stidham all these guys may wind up as duds. The fact is this article says what needs to be said. He is an average passing QB that could become a very good passer. Along with his freakish athleticism makes him one of the most coveted QBs in the country.

So why not take a chance on him? Any QB we get will likely be RSVP and sit out a year. Now that time could be used to work with Whitfield and our staff to improve on passing mechanics. Say we would have gotten Gentry, who was easily the better pure passer and he sat out his first year. Now there is no way Gentry could ever attain athleticism like Gibson has. However with work Gibson could become a passer that's close to Gentry.

You never cease to amaze me with your TG negativity.

Remember when you used to tell us all that TG only mentioned Tennessee because he just wanted twitter followers? You were beating that drum for a while iirc.

Are you sure that was not the case at the time?

With Riley now leaving IMO there is a issue in taking 2 QBs when both would likely need to be RSed IF they stick at QB at all. You are then going into 2015 with Dobbs and Peterman as your QBs. You could put in one of the RSed kids in an emergency but knowing they are not ready it's a wasted year. Ideally IMO either you find a QB who comes in ready to play as a TFR or you take Jennings and then start looking for a transfer option ideally one who could play right away.

How could you come to the conclusion it was? He was obviously interested in Tennessee then he took his visit to UT and we've been the leader since then.

But yeah, it's all some elaborate ruse to get twitter followers lol. Not every recruit is Chuma Edoga, bruh.

Some quotes I loved from that NFL scout on Gibson

First, we asked Chris to just watch Torrance’s film and give us his take. Keep in mind, Chris doesn’t follow HS recruiting. He doesn’t care if you’re a “5 star” or a “2 star.” He’s not swayed by hype, because he doesn’t know whether or not it exists. He just calls it like he sees it, and he is a tough critic at times. But in our experience, if he says you can play…you can play! This is what he had to say:

“Freakish speed for a quarterback. Excellent scrambler and play-maker outside the pocket.”

Nice thing to have in a read-option based spread imo.

Then Chris commented on Gibson’s current ability as a passer vs. his upside.

“He’s certainly a dual-threat guy, but at his current stage of development, when compared to other throwing QBs, he is an average passer. However, he has the talent to become a very good passing QB. With continued development as an in-the-pocket passer he is a power conference level quarterback and again, possesses rare running ability.”

Seems reasonable. I've thought for a while that TG is very raw as a passer but has a ridiculously high ceiling and upside.

I wanted to confirm what Chris believed about Gibson’s raw ability as a passer so I asked him; if Gibson couldn’t run, could he become a legitimate pocket passer? Chris responded by saying:

“Yes, the raw tools are there.”

I want the guy who can get the ball to the playmakers...if that guy can get some yards with his legs...bonus...but the first priority remains the best signal caller...not glorified running back...I don't know that TG doesn't fill that bill...and you don't know that he does...hence the fun discussion.

I always said I felt Tennessee was in his top 3-4. I just did not buy UT was his actual #1. If you did, that's alright.

I'm just happy we haven't settled for a lead footed, pro-style QB who despite supposedly being a pocket passing specialist still can't seem to make enough plays to win. Gibson can win.

Good post.

May be that CBJ has seen the same thing all along too. Maybe we should just let him do his job.

So maybe him waiting helps our recruitment after all as all the other teams are shifting focus.

I mentioned that a while ago. Him waiting till closer to NSD kind of plays into what UT is going to have play out with a lot of the targets remaining IMO. I think that is why we see more offers going out to mid level guys at various positions. IF the coaches miss on top targets, they need to have back up plans. As some kids realize they are being slow played and commit elsewhere, more offers will go out to more back up options.

Which lead footed loser are we not settling for?
