How do I put stripes in my yard? A home in my neighborhood has stripes that are cool. The company mower diagonally one time and the opposite way the next time. Gives it a diamond pattern. Is that something that's added to a mower or just natural with deck mowers?
Yes, stripes are made by alternating directions, but only certain deck designs put down good stripes on their own without the aid of rollers/chains/whatever. Mulching decks tend to stripe better than side discharge decks. Reel mower will make the best stripes, of course.
With residential decks, it may take a few mows before you begin to see the stripes clearly. The key is to not cut too high, and not let it get to high before you cut (especially with side discharge since your clippings will cover your work). Don't mow too fast either. Also depends on the type of turf. Cool season grasses, like fescue, will stripe better (and grow better) when cut high... around 4 inches.
If you're mowing good turf (that you care for regularly), alternate your stripe patterns to reduce compaction, especially with heavier mowers.
As to my mower preference.... Toro all the way. I'm a fan of Bad Boys as well. You really can't go wrong with most of the big names.
You could hit up the turf maintenance center at your local golf course and see if the mechanic has any old rollers he'd be willing to get rid of if you're using a push mower. I've seen some DIY rollers made of sand/concrete filled PVC pipe and a bracket pulled behind the mower, which would work better for a riding mower since you can match it to your deck width.
We're buying 20 acres, a lot of it is pasture, barn, and arenas. Will be using it on the yard around the house and barn. Might do a little pasture clipping, nothing too crazy.
My issue with the Husq z turns was that they always had something dicked up coming from the factory, either not greased, empty hydraulic reservoirs, little things like that rub me the wrong way. I'd recommend their tractors all day.
But, if the price is right, they really aren't bad machines, certainly better than the MTD line of things.
