The sooner people realize Tennessee is not a "destination job" for the top basketball coaches of the world, the better. As fans we like to think that our Vols are on par with just about anyone. That is just not reality and especially with basketball. I had mentioned Tom Izzo in a thread earlier. The man makes 3.7 million a year and his resume CRUSHES Gregg Marshall. But throw 3-4 million at Marshall? Really? When fans are not writing the check, it's easy to throw cash talk around.
The very fact that this is taking some time should be encouraging about Hart. It isn't just about getting a coach that can win, it's about defending the interest of the university. There are 4 parts to this:
1. Is there mutual interest? We want coach, and coach wants us?
2. Is the compensation package acceptable to both parties?
3. What are the coach's guarantees and protections?
4. What are the school's guarantees and protections?
The first 2 are resolved. One or both of the last 2 are the issue. If Hart walks away because of point 4, it is because he refuses to put is into the same position Hammy did. It isn't an issue of whether we *can* hire White...it's whether the terms are acceptable.

This line of thinking is much better than the doom and gloom that's been posted.
As the man making the decisions, Hart has to be willing to draw a line in the sand and stick to it. There are ALOT of basketball coaches around the country making MUCH less than the 1.8 Hart was going to give Zo. Hart has to find the best situation for Tennessee. I'm confident he will do that.
Michael White is willing agree to a deal that makes it it difficult for UT to fire him for 4-5 years and hard for him to leave UT for 4-5 years.
If you want a coach that badly and he is willing to stay married to you, why so much fear to pull the trigger?
The apparent answer is that Hart wants to hire on the cheap and be in a position to fire and hire again at the drop of a hat if all does not go well.
Thus we see the perils of hiring cheap labor. When all is done, it is not so cheap.
Go ahead and call Gregg Marshal if you want guaranteed success. It will cost you, but it will also be a less risky investment.
Obviously Hart did not want him that badly. If he did, he would have gave the buyouts it took to get him.
What does that say about Tennessee's commitment to basketball?
Are we even trying to hire a good coach or just trying to make a cosmetic hire and hope that by throwing some mud on the wall, it just might stick?
It's just funny to me that some complain that we can't hire a coach from LT and Hart is dropping the ball, and others complain that a coach from LT isn't a guaranteed success. Which is the whole point. Hart is trying to get a guy that fits the current budget, who can win, won't bolt once he does, but whom we can get rid of if he doesn't work out. That ain't easy y'all.
It's business. There is a point when the deal is just not worth the cost. Hart not giving everything he had to so White would sign on tells me the cost was just not a good investment for Tennessee.
