Couldn't agree more with Coach Pearl

Pearl didn't get a sniff at a major college job until U.T. because he was considered to have crossed some major moral boundaries when he was an assistant coach at Iowa. In the process, he embarrassed the NCAA, and they got their retribution in the end. They set him up to lie, and he fell directly into the trap.

He didn't cross some moral boundaries, he tried to expose cheating and got blasted...Now...if that same scenario happened today...One would be ripped apart if they knew someone was cheating and not expose it...funny how things change over time....

It doesn't because it's ridiculous. If SEC administrations were so racist, why would they hire any black coaches in the first place?

Forde has taken leave of his senses.

Forde is also Louisville homer who loves bashing the SEC. He writes click bait.

Except it turned out that Deion Thomas never took money from Illinois, both corroborated by the NCAA investigation and Thomas passing a lie detector test. Pearl told his boss that he was going to bring Thomas in, when in reality, Thomas, from Chicago, was always going to go to Illinois. Pearl did his best to bring Thomas in, and when that didn't work, he did his best to bring Illinois down. This included essentially bribed Deion Thomas's best friend to be his informant on Thomas. He didn't get blackballed because he was trying to be a good guy, he got blackballed for being a sleaze ball.

Taped a 17 year old kid and used his best friend for his own gain. Deon Thomas disagrees with you.

Gotta be awkward for Auburn fans that Bruce still refers to himself as a VFL, and still cares so much about UT. Bruce obviously still really wants to be a Vol.

No more awkward than when Peyton goes down to Bama and works with Saban this week.

If it were possible, I'm sure he'd run back to Knoxville to coach rather than Auburn. It really sucks how this all played out. Zo is a d*** for not telling Hart that he wanted to look elsewhere. At least then Hart could have talked to Pearl. The lucky little run to the Sweet 16 prevented us from getting Bruce back.

Must be hard to be a Vol for life and the coach at Auburn at the same time. That's kind of like how Johhny Damon was a Redsock for life...until he started playing for the Yankees.

He was fired, man. When he was eligible to coach again the UT job was not vacant. People need to work, even if not solely for financial reasons, so get over it and move on.

From Bleacher Report:

"I wasn't surprised. I wasn't," Pearl told Athlon Sports this week. "Cuonzo didn't seem to be happy there. I know they talked about the fact that he had to overcome following me, and I understand that we had success, but they still had 18,000 people come to every single game. Overcome that or not, they got great support in Knoxville, great facilities, great university. The embracing needs to work both ways, so I'm happy for coach Martin."

"He maintained a level of success that we worked really hard to create," Pearl told Athlon. "I'm grateful to coach Martin as a former Tennessee head basketball coach, and a Vol for life, I'm grateful for the job he did because he kept it going. I wish him nothing but success at Cal, and if he wasn't happy there and he didn't feel appreciated there, then I'm glad he's not there because I want somebody there that wants to be there. So I appreciate the job he did and I'm happy for him and his family that they got a chance to move on."

I miss Bruce

Would you ever tell your boss you were looking for another job before you had an offer? What if he went and replaced you and then you found out you didn't get the other job?

Well I don't have a boss, so I wouldn't know 😎

Holy crap, some of you act like he stabbed a man in broad daylight.

He lied and got much too severe punishment for it. Getting a punishment that doesn't fit his crime does make him a victim in my book.

Get off your high horses and stop putting the man down who actually made any of you care about basketball.

Rule 1 in dealing with the NCAA: Don't lie to the NCAA.

Rule 1 in dealing with your boss: Don't lie to your boss.

Seems like it should be easy enough not to do either of these things.

So it's OK for the NCAA and the boss to lie to Pearl? I'm just making sure that I understand the level of hypocrisy that you are suggesting.

How did the NCAA lie to Pearl. They gave him a chance to lie and he did, per his reputation.

Deon Thomas said Illinois was buying him an SUV on tape. That program was corrupt as hell and got nailed. But Bruce broke the good ole boy rule, don't rat anyone out.

His discretion was extremely minor, we've clearly saw that the vast majority of the fanbase still loves him.

He did great things here, if he wants to say he's a VFL when he's on someone elses dime and doesn't have to at all, more power too him.

You have to ask Pearl or the NCAA investigators to be completely accurate, but from what I have read Pearl was NOT told the true nature or the line of questioning going into the meeting with the NCAA. Pearl thought he was there to answer questions regarding excessive phone calls to recruits.

Did you miss the part where the NCAA didn't find any money or an S.U.V., or the part where Deon Thomas passed a lie detector test saying that Illinois never offered him anything, and that he was tired of talking with Pearl on the phone every day so he just agreed with whatever he said to get him off the line? He wasn't blackballed for turning in Illinois, he was blackballed for some seriously questionable moral decisions, including bribing Thomas's best friend into spying on Thomas and reporting back to him. If you think a grown man pulling that stuff on 17 year old kids is ok you have some problems. The rest of the coaching community, and the rest of major D1 programs certainly saw what Pearl did as wrong, and punished him for it.

Does it matter? He had a choice, answer a question truthfully or lie. He made his choice.

I'm not even sure UTK could've afforded to rehire BP if they'd wanted to.

We act like we can't afford it yet UT basketball is one of the most valuable in the entire country according to Forbes - more valuable than UF and in the SEC 2nd only to UK in both attendance and value. However, from the AD's standpoint, why cut into that profit when our attendance figures are top10 nationally and our value is so high? I say because that tourney money and extra attendance would trump the higher salary but I don't know if the AD thinks that way.

But it's a myth that we can't afford it. If we wanted Pearl or any other big name we could afford it - all a matter of will.
