Unofficial Coaching Search Thread

Jesus, you guys are complete morons. Sorry if you are so deep in the Tea Party fever swamps that you can't separate your sports from your politics, but the most important characteristic for our next coach is someone who will win, not the guy that has the biggest gun collection or tells the funniest jokes about Obama.

If you turn down a coach as good as Smart because of his politics, you don't deserve to be a sports fan anymore.

We are not going to pay Shaka Smart more than Butch Jones. Ever. And he's not coming for less. Likewise, any basketball coach at a major university that's publicly displaying his politics is asking for half of the fan base to be pissed off the first time he has a 3 game losing streak.

Why isn't every coaching search around here ever based in reality? We've had enough freakin' practice at it to know how it works by now.

Agreed, Smart is a pipe dream. Let's just not turn our coaching search into the McCarthy hearings please.

You look for the track record," Hart said at his news conference on Tuesday afternoon. "You look for somebody that can recruit. Our lifeblood is recruiting in all of our sports. When you go into a process like this, you want to be sure that the person you're hiring is an outstanding recruiter. You also want a person that brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm.

"We are looking for a track record, [but] you don't always end there. Perhaps at the end of the day we don't attract someone with a significant track record. Perhaps we attract a rising star. I don't know, all of that is hard to forecast, but the rising star is different in terms of the financial package than the person with an outstanding track record

So let's see after reading this from the press conference...it comes down to Tyndall at Southern Miss and White at LA Tech

Buckle up...I think Howland would be a major upgrade, but I just don't see Hart ponying up the $$$.

True but he wouldn't be as expensive as Smart or Marshall. In my opinion, Howland is about as close to an upgrade over Martin as you're going to get.

I think people can comment with whoever they want/wholeheartedly believe Tennessee can throw money at, but the odds are on the new head coach being one of these two.

This may prove to be very good deductive reasoning.

If I had to choose between Tyndall and White, I guess I'd have to choose Tyndall just because his resume is longer. Tyndall seems to be a good coach, and his Morehead State team was a lot of fun to watch. Kenneth Faried was a man in the NCAA tourney.

Apparently White's teams are a lot of fun to watch, which would probably be a plus at Tenn. I just haven't seen enough of La. Tech or Southern Miss to really discuss either coach in-depth.

Who is your top 3 or 4 choices?

Well since I don't know who's actually realistic I'll list everyone I would be happy with, in order, ending with the best coach available that I feel is 100% realistic.

Marshall
Howland
Mack
Smart
Boyle
White

White won his conference in only his 2nd year. Something LT hadn't done in 14 years. Then he followed it up with another conference championship in their new conference, CUSA. I think he would be a very good hire, and there's no reason we should have to go down any further than him on the list if it stands as above. I can't think of any other better up-and-coming coaches.

Good list. I wish Hart would go ahead and hire White and get this over with. He is a winner.
