I think your age limit should be 50 or younger. Anything over that and you're getting a guy who's more interested in retirement than coaching for the next decade.

this is just not true. most coaches never want to retire even when it IS time. His age is not a factor.

I have always liked coach Byrd. I would be on board but I think DH is going to go after someone much younger. JMO.

Rick Byrd would finish his career at Tennessee! He is only 60 years old, a perfect age for a long term commitment to the Vols! However, the reason he is still at Belmont is probably because that is home and he is loyal to the university. Tennessee probably could not get him for that reason.

Also he will add more stability than any other coach could offer. If Marshall wins 3 sec championships and goes to the final 4 2x then Duke comes calling... He gone!!!

If Byrd comes to UT he retires there, and leaves the program in a good state.

He wanted the job during the last coaching search; he's from Knoxville and/or attended UT. Not going to link to any sources, but it was reported and the proof is out there somewhere on the webs.

I agree SeniorDrill. Rick is a very loyal guy to his university. If by chance he is hired by UT, he will be committed for a long time as long as his health is good. He has expressed his happiness being at Belmont on many occasions. The bigger question is if he would accept the job at UT.

And he probably is/was. But I do remember the local beat saying that Byrd wanted the job. Former assistant under Mears, grew up in Knoxville, former coach at Maryville College.

As Dave Hart threw out there, WINNER!
2013-14 26-10 NIT 2-1
2012-13 26-7 NCAA lost to Arizona
2011-12 27-8 NCAA lost to Georgetown
2010-11 30-5 NCAA lost to Wisconsin
Could go on, but you get the point!

My knock against Byrd is that he's a bit long in the tooth at this point. Might be a different story if he were 20 years younger. Also, he's never made it any further in the Big Dance than Cuonzo did. I'd prefer a younger guy who can recruit like a bandit and go toe-to-toe with Calipari and Donovan.

If Marshall does that at UT, I'd be willing to let him go to Duke...would hate it but if he does what you said, we wouldn't have any trouble replacing him with another top coach!

I agree... That would be a good problem to have. I'm just saying for a program that has had a very unstable past, Byrd would add more stability than anyone!
