Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Jalen was asking for another go, looked like he thought JRM started before the whistle. They both did the first go, then Jalen seemed to think JRM did the second time, but Butch said no.

I didn't realize how big Curt is. He definitely looks the part of a DE.

He sure has gotten much bigger since he last played. It looks like those chicken legs are getting bigger too haha. Kid had some chicken legs under dooleys staff which likely is why he had constant lower body injuries.

So is the glass half full after yesterday or half empty?

Always half full. I think this offense is going to be special this fall, regardless who the QB is. I also think after the 18 new Vols arrive the defense will become much better, the competition level alone will be night and day on that side of the ball.

If the defense can make some nice improvement before the season starts I think 7+ wins is very doable. 7 wins and a bowl game will do just fine in '14, should set us up to close another elite recruiting class and 9+ wins in '15.

Do you think that the offense has the edge in spring ball?
They had the lion's share of the EE's and most of them are in year two of the system.

Absolutely.

I think we have some very good players on defense too but just not enough, especially depth. The 2nd and 3rd team on defense right now is going to look completely different in fall camp. Guys like Hendrix, Sawyers, Barnett, Bates, Weatherd, Bryant, TKjr, Gaulden and Berry will all very likely be in that group, a few of them likely win starting spots in fall camp or early in the season.

IMO, Gaulden or TKjr win the safety spot next to Randolph, Bates gives JRM a real run for his money, Hendrix, Sawyers and Barnett will all play a significant roles this fall if healthy, and Berry possibly beats out Moseley for the corner spot.

Again, at the very least the defense is going to be night and day with the competition level and no longer will we have walk-ons all over the 2 deep.

I'm on the optimistic side now. I think the OL will struggle against elite teams and our defense will be very young and inexperienced overall, which will hold us back somewhat. But we will be much more athletic across the board. The fall team will be a lot better than the spring team, and the spring team looked pretty good.

I think making a bowl is a very reasonable expectation, and I wouldn't be surprised by 7 regular season wins (possibly 8, if we pull a big upset or catch some breaks in the games I think will be close/tight).

I'm salivating over what 2015 and beyond should be like...

I think 7 is a good benchmark based upon our schedule for 2014....if we were to win more than that, it would mean that the influx of talent from the '14 class contributed tremendously and effectively in their first year. The question marks will be at OL and DL in my opinion...

I'm sort of thinking that our offensive line woes will still be with us in 2015. If we get our top targets for OLine this year (and DLine) then I think we start really seeing progress in 2016 as far as wins go. What does Butch say? We live in an instant gratification society. You know he's talking about you and Ron when he says that. :)

I don't think the D Line will be as bad as most think.

We have Vereen, Williams, O Brien, Williams as possible starters. Then we will add Hendrix, Baarnett, Henderson, and Sawyers all possible contributors. Then you have Weathered and Maggitt who could play DE.

I was surprised to hear Vereen's interview yesterday regarding Mosley. He is of the opinion that Mosley will be a significant contributor from day one and he and Mosley are according to hm good friends. That was really encouraging because I figured Mosley would redshirt. FWIW, I agree with your assessment. I think our defense will be our strength this year (contingent on playcalling) and even though it will be young it will be much faster and much more talented.

That'd be huge for Mosley to play! He could be a big time run stopper like what we thought Big Dan could've been.

The secondary was pretty bad yesterday because at least 50% of the guys that will play this fall weren't in it yesterday. I'm expecting it to look something like Moseley/Gaulden, Randolph, Kelly, Sutton, which IMO isn't half bad at all.

Based on twitter, Mosley is one of the only signees that I dont see putting in work. He never talks about working out or slimming down or anything. I really hope hes hitting the gym regularly
