Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Not sure what you mean by "succeeds". Succeeds in starting or succeeds as in being successful while he is playing. But to me, if we have a walk-on starting at LT we are effed. To think we are this far along and still in the same boat as when the Sullins boys were forced to play. Doesn't bode well.

Performance above all else...5* or walkon...whoever doesn't get Fergie hatecrimed :scare:

Agreed. OP would probably think Eric Fisher was horrible if he was on our team due to him being a 2*. Forget any development and current performance, there are like unicorns (they don't exist).

Love the bull in ring stuff. Look how ready those guys are to jump in their now. Talk about setting the tone for practices.

The offense scored on all five of its first-and-goal drives. Worley and Dobbs kept zone-read option plays for touchdowns, Peterman hit Josh Smith for a touchdown across the middle and Ferguson hit Pearson on a back-shoulder throw on fourth down.

same link as above

Thank God our receivers have so much potential, because it looks like the TEs and Rbs are going to have to help protect the Qb all year.

Would be nice to get a summer OL transfer or 2

I think the interior will be good and probably better run blockers than last years group, but if a true freshman and walk on are at tackles then that is about as bad a situation as you can get. If they are having trouble with our pass rushers just wait till they go against SEC talent.

@FootballTimeMag: Right now—defenders are in the backfield at the snap. The o-line, especially at tackle, is really struggling.

@FootballTimeMag: If the #Vols get to a bowl this year, Jones needs to be in consideration for SEC Coach of the Year.

@FootballTimeMag: Very bad. RT @blakecreek: @FootballTimeMag how'd the o-line look today?

@FootballTimeMag: @blakecreek Ferguson had a better day than Worley except for two plays.

@FootballTimeMag: @blakecreek he's been better but not a ton better. No one is taking the job from him though.

@FootballTimeMag: If the season started today, there's no question Worley would be the starter.

@FootballTimeMag: The #Vol QBs ran for their lives all day.

He is always either overboard negative or overboard positive. He has no middle ground. So many things will change from now to fall. 18 more freshman with some major impact kids on defense and special teams. 50 percent of team going through first spring which means there will be several that make a big jump through summer workouts. Way too early to make a comment claiming we won't make a bowl game. If we get consistent QB play we will make a bowl.

I agree. I also think the WR play will help alleviate the Oline woes. If they get separation fast, the QB won't need all day to sit in the pocket.

And if the passing game opens up, the running game will too.

Apparently no one is going to be confusing our 5th year senior walk-on with Eric Fisher if the reports about OL play are to be believed. The real story was that Blair, one of our JUCO studs is getting outplayed by the walk-on. You can pretend all you want to that the reason is because we have had this Eric Fisher clone on our bench for the last 4 years and no one noticed before now, but the more likely scenario is that they both have just sucked up to now. Hopefully by fall one of them will have a light come on.

I wouldn't underestimate Maggitt when it comes to ranking SEC talent. Other than that I pretty much agree with you.

It's only been 10 practices or so. I think Blair will be okay after Lawson gets him into shape this summer. We may need Wiesman to take RG and Kerby to slide out to RT but we will still need depth. My plan is to wait until the depth chart comes out for the USU game before I panic.

This is kind of what I was thinking. Was wondering if they would put in Weisman and move the line around. Also think Blair could get in shape and take the spot back. His biggest problem is against the speed rush. He has 5 months to get into shape. Maybe Sanders will step up and move the line around a little bit. Im not that worried... we still have time

Honestly, I would be shocked (I thought about that word) if Blair isn't our LT. We don't have anyone close to him I don't think but he's a new guy so he has a lot to learn and he's not in the best of shape right now. Whatever he thought was in shape before - welcome DB to SEC conditioning requirements. The learning part is keeping him from playing fast. He's thinking too much. I think I heard Thomas needs to increase his upper body strength and of course he has to learn a lot as well. Also, I agree with you that Sanders may be an option but we don't really hear much about him or Kendrick or Pair so I don't have any info on where they're at. I did hear that AS was one of the 600#+ squatters.

This is my thoughts. I think we'll be okay on the interior. Jackson, Kerbyson, and Crowder with Wiesman providing depth is solid. Tackle scares me. Blair is out of shape/not ready, Gilliam is a walk on, and Thomas a true freshman.

I was thinking this would happen before camp started, but obviously the coaches feel Kerbyson/Thomas is better than Wiesman/Kerbyson. Maybe Kerbyson isn't athletic enough for RT or maybe Thomas > Wiesman. I'll trust the coaches on that. LT scares me much more.

Of course I'm just speculating but I figure you throw the new guys into the fire right away if you want them to have a sense of urgency in getting up to speed. My view is that spring practice is for development so I don't think we'll know who is going to fill certain open spots until near the end of fall camp. In this way everyone is working harder to get the nod, the new guys because they're behind, and the older guys because they can't let a HS kid take their opportunity. It may be wishful thinking on my part but I think a lot of what goes on in the spring is done to create competition.
