Believe what you want, but I'll trust my high school friend of 30 years who has been a college assistant in Wisconsin for over 10 years and recruits Milwaukee regularly, plus knows a myriad of Marquette people. He wasn't the guy.
The writer who covers Marquette for the Milwaukee Journal was on the radio in Milwaukee and wrote a story about the process today. According to him, Martin had a bad interview with the school President, that's what he said on the radio. In his story, the President said the talks with Martin were a dead end. They had people meet Wojo on Saturday, loved him, the President flew him to Milwaukee on Sunday and he killed in the interview and they offered him the job.
May just be Marquette's spin on it.

If there were factions as you say...isn't it possible Martin wasn't the choice of those your friend was in contact with?
Or he was their choice, he removed his name, and they're simply saving face?
I don't really care what the case really is, but its never cut and dry, man.

"I had communications with Shaka," incoming Marquette President Mike Lovell said Tuesday. "I can tell you he seems to be a pretty good guy. He's going to stay at VCU for a while and I'm not sure what he's ultimately looking for, but I think he's got something very selective in his mind."
Lovell then talked to former UCLA coach Ben Howland, who was Lovell's colleague at the University of Pittsburgh.
"Ben Howland wanted the job," Lovell said. "I talked to my friend, the chancellor at the University of Pittsburgh who ultimately hired him. And I got to talk to Ben. We shared some good memories of some good teams he had there in the early 2000s when I was there."
Marquette put him on hold.
Then the three-man search committee interim athletic director Bill Cords, interim president Father Robert Wild and Board of Trustees vice chairman John Ferraro brought Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin to Lovell's attention. Those talks reached a dead end.
here's the article. doesn't say anything about a bad interview.
bonus fact: the author's name is actually Mike Hunt.
