The way the game is evolving, it's almost necessary to have a qb who can make plays with his feet. I think Nick Marshall is a god awful passer, but their two-headed monster coming out of the backfield always kept defenses honest and allowed him LOTS of single coverage down-field. Give me that coupled with our receiving core and I'm GOOD.

A lot of Marshall is Malzahn. I would kill to have him as OC. Gibson is a phenomenal ath. Gentry is a better fit in this O.

Ask Erik how much of his college career he remembers lol... Smh, I like him but to say he is a great evaluator of talent is a stretch. Now homer? Nailed it. I like Gentry as a pure passing qb, but with the strain Gibson could put on a defense with his legs would only help make his throws downfield easier, being that the defense will always have their eyes in the backfield.

Not saying Ainge is an advanced QB scout. I'm saying he probably knows much more about the position than 99.5% of the people on Vol Nation.

I wasn't juxtaposing Gibson against Gentry. I personally hope we get BOTH of them and see how things develop. I have to admit I am very excited about the possibility of Gibson because, like it has been stated, elite athletes seem to do very well at the QB position in college even if they aren't the best throwers.

What Marshall has going for him is a quick release and a canon. He has the strongest arm in the SEC and gets it away so fast. That quick release is crucial when you are running their offense.

aaaannnnnnnnd the fact that you have to respect two backs out of the backfield that can take it to the house on any given play.

Yes yes, it all helps and coincides but Auburn's terrible receivers made huge plays last year because they were single coverage, out of position because of the worry that the ball is coming out of the backfield.

Serious question: Butch and Mike B want a QB who can disrupt a defense with the threat of scrambling. Obviously Gibson has the edge there, but at 6'7 do you really think that he can move down-field effectively?

I mean, it's not like he's going to surprise anyone when he scrambles.. it's kinda hard to miss a guy that big..

Well, he moves decent for a bigger guy. Gentry is a much better passer. Just watching Cincy offenses in the past, they prefer throw first, then scramble if the play breaks down QB's. It was exactly what LaFevur (sp?) and Collaros were. Decent mobility, but throw first guys. And i see the height thing, but i reallt don't think that would be much of a factor. IF Butch wants Gibson over Gentry, cool. But VQ and scout have both said that Gentry is number one target. I'm not saying I think Gibson would be a terrible QB at all, and if we get him I'll be glad. I just think Gentry fits this offense much better. I think if Gibson were to come here, he'd get his shot at QB though. Now if he stays there that's a different question.

Imo, I think we take Jennings and Gentry at QB. Gibson will see we already have 2 QB's and weigh his other options (assuming he still commits after the season).

Vince Young 6' 5"
Cam Newton 6' 5"

2 inches difference...........

5 + 2 inch difference + 2 inch difference = 9
6 foot plus the 2 inch difference = 8

'98 ..........

I'm so glad we're finally argument about not having enough spots for all of these 4 and 5 star talents rather than whether or not the latest 2 star we poached out of Bama and whether or not he is a "diamond in the rough."

^^^^ what a good argument to have lol!!!

None taken man I enjoy a good debate. But ex players are the worst talent evaluating talent it's well documented. It wasn't like he was a top pick either he was a 5th round pick. There are former NFL scouts who believe Gibson has the raw ability to be a Good passer.

Raw...beginning to smell...suspicious looking objects crawling inside :glare:

I dont care about stars or measurables or if he wipes front to back or back to front...

Find someone that wins games and leads his team.

That is all.

Edit: for those wondering, I'm a nobody who doesn't get paid to evaluate or e-analyze. Im just a normal "Joe" that wants my team to return to relevance.

Then you don't belong here...we're all compensated.

This, or Gibson commits and then Jennings sees the handwriting on the wall.

I could be off base here, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

But are you saying that former college football players are the worst at evaluating & recognizing talent of football players that are preparing for and will soon be playing college football?

And this is well documented? Interesting, where can one find this documentation?

Also, for future reference, where should I turn for knowledge & evaluations of football recruits? Since I now know that people that have played the game before have no idea what talent is. VolNation posters, the mailman, local bartender, Google.com, local priest, psychiatrist? Let me know the best source of football talent evaluators please. I've been wrong all these years. TIA.

I'd say Lebron James gets up and down the court pretty effectively being even taller.. Tall guys can be athletic too.

I dont want to lose Jennings for anyone. Elite athlete. #2 prospect in the state by 247. I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize losing him.

Assuming they land him you take the first QB to commit between Gibson and Gentry and be done with it. And I dont know if you can wait close to signing day for someone like Gibson to decide. Elite QB's just dont do that anymore. Watson even committed very early last year.

Someone posted stats on Butch's Cincy QBs yesterday...between Legaux and Kay,the latter had the higher YPC...and wasn't far behind total production in less than half the season...which one of those was the trumpeted Dual Threat? :dunno:

This young man doesn't act like your normal teenager. Seems pretty mature for his age. Really liked the way he lit up when talking about his experience and what stood out about UT.

He was looking at the BALL OF YARN app on his iPhone :ermm:
