Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Found this story interesting. I thought it was a bad painting myself, and evidently so did everyone else.

Derek Mason painting to be redone after complaints

That thing below Mason is the worst part...altho the artist was accurate there.

Its empty.

On a somewhat related note, I think I know why I like the recruiting forum so much better than the other forums on this site. I know the following statement won't apply to everyone here, but I think more people in this forum are cautious, glass-half-full types. This forum also is characterized (more often) by respectful conversation and disagreements as opposed to knock-down, drag-out fights. Thanks, and Go Vols!

The recruiting forum is to the football forum as Joseph Gordon Levitt is to Bob Saget's stand up comedy.

The recruiting forum is to the football forum as the original Star Wars trilogy is to the latest installment of the Rambo series.

The recruiting forum is to the football forum as Netflix is to MTV commercials.

The recruiting forum is to the football forum as A Tribe Called Quest is to Lil Jon.

The recruiting forum is to the football forum as Fresh Prince of Bel Air reruns is to Two and Half Men reruns.

The recruiting forum is to the football forum as Montario Hardesty is to Davante Bourque.

The recruiting forum is to the football forum as POA's new grill is to the basketball forum right now.

Hah I've only seen like 15 minutes of that movie. The only thing I remember is that it had Rita from Dexter in it and it seemed real silly. It's possible that I jumped the gun there. Got kinda carried away with the analogies. :)

Though graphic, I was not disappointed. It's not like Rocky "5", or something.

There is one scene in the latest Rambo, where the whole Junta is chasing him, and he finds this unexploded bomb dropped from a plane, who knows how long ago... let's just say, that was epic.

I can't wait till I wake up in the morning, and see this has become a 4 page argument on movies and music, lol.

How much do you guys think the all new O/Dlines are going to hurt us this year?

I've been doing some reading on other team's message boards, and it seems like everyone has written us off because we're breaking in new linemen on both sides of the ball.

Do ya'll think the growing pains will be that bad?

You're just farting rainbows now, with all of this positivity.

I won't respond to all, but firing Dooley after his second year would have assured no decent coach in the country would take the job. No one wants to work for a boss with a trigger finger. In retrospect, yeah, Dooley needed to be gone, but you can't pull the plug after two seasons, one with a bowl game, and the other one game from a bowl.

agreed - he also didnt have bray a full year that 2nd year and lost hunter right off the bat

2010 looking back was not a bad coaching job and with current rules he wouldve won that bowl game

so I agree - no AD would have fired him after that 2011 campaign - it looked like he had things ready for a good 2012 and most AD's would have kept him to find out

coaches would have definitely not looked on firing DD after 2011 kindly

No - I think our DL has been poor for several years and while I don't expect a ton of improvement this year I don't think it will be any worse than what we have seen the past few years

on the OL I think it will struggle early but likely they will gel into a capable, not great, unit - our offense will live or die based on our ability to find a competent QB who can get it to some of our new playmakers

EDIT.....I have always thought too much is made of who you return and that people don't take into account returning players who aren't very good - returning all those senior DL last year didnt make our DL great - I will take new guys with talent every day of the week vs. returning guys who have proven they aren't up to the task - JMO

To each their own, but I live in Chattanooga and just last night returned from San Franciso on a flight. I'd drive to Memphis and back every time over a cross country plan trip.

Driving wears me out. Until cars can drive themselves, I'll take a long nap over a long drive any day.

I think the DL will be the same (which is to say, bad) or better. More likely better, since they are faster and more athletic.

I think I'm in the minority, but I think the OL will be a train wreck. Better skill players and QB play will bail them out somewhat, but I think we will see a significant overall drop off and we will be recruiting OL hard core for 2015. I'm thinking 35+ sacks allowed and dozens of TFLs. Might get really ugly in games where we play elite DLs. Just is what it is. I expect "fire Mahoney" posts to be all the rage next fall.

Completely agree on the OL. It could get real ugly.

I'm cautiously optimistic about The future of the defensive line. DE has been such a weak spot for us in recent years. I think Vereen and Hendrix have a good opportunity to wreak havoc 2015.

Hendrix is probably in the two deep in August so he will have ample playing time. If we can get an elite DT my jimmies will be rustled in a good way

Yeah. I think the OL will be about like the 2010 version, but maybe a little better since we won't be relying on so many freshmen. I actually think that makes it even more important that whoever lands the QB spot can run. I think Worley's limited mobility will make him a sitting duck back there.

This is one of my fears as well, but I'm hoping we're wrong. I really think the OL has potential. But I just can't imagine that we're going to get better without lots of bumps along the way. Bumps that will probably cost us games.

I know we tried to run some screens last year, and I've seen clips of them working on them this spring. I'm 100% ready for our o-line to give up sacks, but i'm hoping that'll allow us to take some screen plays for big gains. The defense might not be able to tell a screen set up vs them just blowing by our o-line. ha

Against my better judgment I'm going to throw in some of the opinions that I've heard this year.
Let me make this very clear - this is not my opinions or beliefs, only what I've heard from others.
*About 10%-15% don't like Martin because he is Black.
*About 25% don't think he can recruit good players.
*Easily 75% don't like it because he has replaced Pearl, but to clarify it wouldn't matter who it was, they wouldn't like it.
*This was an interesting one, about 25%-30% didn't like the racial make-up of the team - they felt that there should be 2 to 3 white kids on the team.
*About 20% believe that Tennessee should make every effort to keep Martin because of his ethics, his background, his Christian leanings and that he can win without "lying and cheating" (their words).
*And last - one person hated him and said he shouldn't be coaching anywhere because he couldn't understand him when he talked. I replied to him that he was tone deaf on bass sounds and he asked what difference that made and I said "just forget it"!
Just thought some of you on VN would like to read what I've heard and I wonder if any of you have heard similar comments.

I almost gave up on this after your 10 - 15%, 25%, 75%, and 25-30%.

No wonder coach Martin is having such a hard time - 140% of the people don't like him. That's a lot to overcome. :)

You're in the minority...other than that COMPLETELY WRONG :hi:

35+ sacks?

No way.

cfbstats.com - 2010 Southeastern Conference Team Leaders

Clicking through the last few years (including our awful 41 allowed in 2010), there normally are 1-3 teams in the SEC each year that allow that many sacks. With the way things are sounding this spring I would not be surprised. I think UGA and UF will light us up, among others. Maybe our offensive style will prevent some sacks, but those could be replaced by TFLs.

I think OL and DL play are what will keep our win total around 6 this year. I'm really optimistic for the future but I think this year will be painful again at times against the teams we hate the most.

We will see. All guesses at this point. But I've learned not to ignore significant concerns raised in spring practice. Last year they said the wideouts were struggling and sure enough, come the fall, they really struggled.

We are not giving up 3+ sacks a game. This OL has been holding its own against the defense so far this spring. By fall I think they will be fine. Not as good at pass blocking as last year but a lot better than some chicken- littles think.
