BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

Auburn fans have gotten crazy in the last two weeks. I can hardly wait for Pearl to get his next "show cause" evaluation.

Get ready to wait a while. If the AA let's them get away with purchasing players at a $200k clip and having many on the payroll, I don't see how a little extra contact will hurt them. Plus they have people on staff that are well versed in the art of lying and cheating without getting caught.

There could be numerous reasons.

Removing name from consideration is different than turning a job down.

Hart and Cuonzo could have made some type of agreement for Cuonzo to stay at UT.

Marquette could have decided to go in a different direction , informed Cuonzo thus giving him to opportunity to "save face" by pulling his name.

Cuonzo could have decided Marquette wasn't a job he wanted to pursue after he interviewed and gave it some thought

He could have used the interview as a means to get a raise and extension from UT

It could be that Martin likes Tennessee, that the University likes coach Martin, that Harts sees that Martin is maturing as a head coach, or that those who want Tennessee to fail have themselves failed.

I think Martin has picked up on a lot of his weaknesses as a coach and will get them shored up with haste. I also think fans are expecting somewhat of a down year anyway based on talent. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if next year looks a lot like his first year. We'll be picked to finish near the bottom of the SEC. We could very well have a solid year and have a shot at getting in the tournament much to the surprise of the "experts". If that happens, I think the fans will be glad we stuck with him.

It's all speculation but if he misses the dance which is a very real possibility, I think the fans will turn on him that much quicker. In many of the fan's eyes he's been flirting with another girl and his leash will be much shorter. Btw, why are we rebuilding in his fourth season?

I've long suspected that the last several years have created something like an opiate addiction to coaching drama/coaching searches/coaching rumors for part of the UT fan base.

This doesn't exactly change that.

Sure, claim "we coulda had Marshall/Shaka/Howland/etc!!!" all you want. I think if your honest, we all know how that search would've went.

A little continuity in the UTAD is not a bad thing.

Yes! For all you minions that think changing coaches every 3-4 years is actually a good thing, you need to step back and think about the effect that has on a program. Recruits like stability and knowing the coaches that recruit them will be around to coach them for 4 years. Our AD has had some disastrous basketball coaching searches over the years and Cuonzo leaving would have led to another disastrous search which would have set the program back another 4 years. Cuonzo is growing into being a very good coach , you don't get to the Sweet 16 by getting lucky. Get behind the man and support him and this program or continue to try and tear it down if you so choose. In other words, be a fan or be a moron.

Z, you swore him off and matter of factly stated be wasn't our future. Multiple times. So 10 games turned you 180 and you think he is now?

It didn't turn me 180. I don't think CCM is the guy still. But I am not 100% on that. I want to be 100% sure before firing the guy. I saw some things that I like. When I said he should be fired, I also thought UT would miss the tourney. They did not.

And I had no faith that UT would have hired a good replacement had he left.

Just coach better and dont wait 15 games to make adjustments the avg Joe sees as necessary. Same thing happens every year. Maybe it won't now, but not confident.

Fair enough. At least you aren't acting like you were there the whole time and point fingers at those of us that were/are concerned about coaching and motivation concerns prior to March.

Rebuilding? If Stokes comes back, we have a chance to be as good or better than this past season. Richardson may be more solid than McRae, who tended to be very inconsistent and took a lot of questionable shots, which Richardson does not tend to do. Hubbs will be back 100% and can take the role that. Richardson had this season. If we get the transfer from TSU, our frontcourt will actually improve if Stokes stays as Maymon's knees prevented him from being more than just a wide body under the goal. A lot of "if's" but a lot of possibilities than would not be considered " rebuilding"

Maybe you are confused... I am referring to official consensus polls/rankings. CCM bashers claim we severely underperformed based on our roster/talent, and I am pointing out that we were never ranked in the AP or Coaches Poll in preseason or mid-season. We met expectations, and may have actually outperformed national consensus expections.

Before someone lists another preseason poll by i-failed-english.com...please look up the definition of "consensus"

All I know is that Las Vegas had Tennessee as the 19th best team in the country prior to the Tournament and one of the power rating polls had us as even higher. This was a team with a lot of talent. To infer we didn't underachieve during the regular season would be incorrect. This was a top 20 team talent wise.

So, if Stokes returns and we get the transfer from Tenessee State, I am not sure where we should expect a down year.

McCrae is a big loss, but hopefully Hubbs shoulder is better and he lives up to his 5* billing.

Richardson is much better now than at beginning of season, I see Davis, Moore being better. We have two true point guards.

Only way I see us being worse is if Stokes leaves and with Martin staying we have a better chance of Stokes staying

"taking your name out of consideration for the job" is code for "you didn't get the job" so you can save face.....IMO....

Wonder what school CCM will interview with next? BC - Wake???

Maybe the grass wasn't greener.

Maybe he really does love UT and doesn't let all the **** talking break him! We as fans just need to embrace him as our coach because he is our coach and he WANTS to be here obviously. I will support him till the day he is not our coach anymore

Actually, as I pointed out in another thread, McRae was actually very consistent this year and Josh was the one who was all over the map.

Could have fooled me once we got into the tourney. McRae was inconsistent and jacked up some horrible shots from beyond the arc.. Richardson stepped up his game and has shown more improvement over the past 2 years than any player on the team. If he continues to improve, he will be an All-SEC player next season and isn't prone to take " bad" shots

Did you watch the games?

Jordan's 16 point second half when he took over for the Vols was the only reason we had any shot at all vs Michigan.

Josh did have a nice tournament. Scored almost as much as Jordan did and played nice defense.

But in the two games before the tournament started Josh had 7 points against South Carolina and 4 points against Florida.

He is good on defense and wildly inconsistent on offense. He may have 20 or he may have 2 on a given night.

And as I posted in another thread, Jordan had more rebounds, blocks, steals and assists than Josh this season while scoring almost twice as much as Josh.

SMH at all those wanting Cuonzo gone. is he my favorite? hell no but I really dont know if TN could hire someone better. He's won 10+ games every year and if the SEC were a little better top to bottom the NIT bids are tournament bids. seems like everyone forgot bruce got blown out by 30 with multiple nba talents in his last tournament game. this is starting to remind me of the football team with fulmer/chavis and look what that debacle has turned into.

Multiple NBA talent, who? Pearl also had them in tourney every year. Winning 10 games in the SEC in basketball is nothing special.
