BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

It was weird to watch when it happened.

so you are saying you seen the unemotional hug ?

you about to get into trouble if you actually did not see it with your own eyes and don't have a link to it.

link or pictures ?

I mean of course you say no you are trying to prove a point, but I think if you make the sweet sixteen you basically finish in the top 16 of that season. Witch is better than all the preseason rankings your posting #justsayin

LaSalle and Florida Gulf Coast both made the sweet 16 last year. Neither finished in the top 16.

Wisconsin lost in the first round and finished ahead of both.

Your head.

I wasn't saying if you finish in the sweet 16 that means you finish in the top 16 of the final AP/coaches rankings. I'm saying if you finish in the sweet sixteen than you basically finish in top 16 of that year.

I hope everyone of these "were heading in the right direction" folks eat the biggest pile of crow imaginable. This hurts worse than anything UT basketball related since Izzo beat us in the elite 8

Here we go again ... a fan hoping for his team to fail. How else would you expect people to "eat crow"?Remember, Coach and Team are one and the same. Neither succeeds without the other.

Are you seriously wanting to Vols to fail to prove your point man?

We got lucky getting to play Iowa, UMass and Mercer. Once we played a real team(not a great one) we were blown out until Michigan let up and allowed us back in it. ...

Wow. Nothing like being honestly balanced when telling the story. :eek:lol:

The national media or coaches never believed our roster was as great on paper as CCM bashers claim.

Billy Donovan did and spoke clearly concerning it pre-season. It took a while (nearly too long) to get it to awake, but when it finally started clicking because of whatever factor, we reached the potential that many expected. A play away from Elite 8.

We were never ranked in the Top 25 in the AP or Coaches poll at any point this season. Preseason nor mid-season. These are the ONLY consensus national polls... You are listing rankings from single websites/magazines. The national media or coaches never believed our roster was as great on paper as CCM bashers claim.

I find it pretty funny that you for some reason want to deny the half dozen or so members of the various sporting press outlets that cover NCAA basketball nationally that I found after a few minutes of searching, but buy completely into the rankings of people who work for the local papers and generally cover one team or the coaches, of whom 35 total vote out of 350 and a good portion of them likely let someone do it for them.

BTW, we were 26th in the pre-season AP, 29th in the Coaches.

So essentially every poll I can find in the pre-season had us between 17th and 29th which puts us on average around an expected 5-6 seed.

The 5-6 seeds averaged 25 wins this season. Had we not had the bad losses to A&M, UTEP, and Vandy, we have 24 wins and are a 5-6 seed. Right were we were expected to be by most pre-season prognostication. What you do from there is all about draw in the tournament.

Except that's not what you said. You said "if you make the sweet 16 isn't that really saying you're one of the 16 best teams in the country."

It means you finished in the top 16 teams of the NCAA tournament. I personally don't believe for a minute that Dayton is a better team than Wichita State. I gave examples last year that the Coaches Poll, whom I was informed is one of two end all, be all rankings, didn't agree that finishing in the sweet 16 made you one of the best 16 teams. That it didn't in the opinion of the coaches, mean they were better than a team that lost in the 1st round.

In a for instance, Georgia went 4-12 in the SEC in 2008, but got hot and won the SEC tournament. Did that mean they were the best team in the SEC that year? Not to me, it just meant they were better than the 4 teams they played on the 4 days they played them. That's just how tournament basketball can work sometimes.

Maybe you are confused... I am referring to official consensus polls/rankings. CCM bashers claim we severely underperformed based on our roster/talent, and I am pointing out that we were never ranked in the AP or Coaches Poll in preseason or mid-season. We met expectations, and may have actually outperformed national consensus expections.

Before someone lists another preseason poll by i-failed-english.com...please look up the definition of "consensus"

And our Sweet 16 finish means we played into a 4-seed. Hence "exceeded" expectations by your own logic. Thank you...mic drop...walk off stage.

Once the tournament starts it's all about matchups at the individual team level and a 4/5 game should generally be a toss-up. We should have been a 5 seed or so, so playing out to the Sweet 16 is about on expectations from the pre-season.

But it doesn't explain the body of work in the regular season or the fact that you're trying to sell that we majorly overachieved based on the AP and coaches polls or our lack of entering them this year.

I pointed out that many many CBB professionals thought we were top 25 material. Including enough coaches and AP reporters to have us at #29 and #26.

That we went in the tank during the regular season and never sniffed those levels again doesn't discount the argument that we should have been a sweet 16 level team and that many people actually thought we would be.

To me you're retroactively lowering expectations because we had a bad regular season.

I have crazy theories. Shaka Smart was rumored to be the next coach. Media went crazy. They apologized and were wrong.

Cuonzo Martin apparently took his name out of the race. On April Fools day? My mind is about to explode.

Are you rooting against UT just for the sake of being right?
I get you don't like Cuonzo's style but if he ends up winning, who cares?

I hope people don't act like jackasses if he decides to stay. The guy has never done anything to embarrass the university and his players keep their nose clean for the most part. If he comes back, he deserves our support until he proves otherwise. Time will tell.

Too late, they're jackasses to begin with

It doesn't make a lot of sense for an active coach to fly to another school, interview for their job, then turn them down.

If you didn't want their job, why bother?

Since when is winning 3 games in the tournament "mediocre"? SMDH

I am very pleased with this year's results, and look forward to next season.

There could be numerous reasons.

Removing name from consideration is different than turning a job down.

Hart and Cuonzo could have made some type of agreement for Cuonzo to stay at UT.

Marquette could have decided to go in a different direction , informed Cuonzo thus giving him to opportunity to "save face" by pulling his name.

Cuonzo could have decided Marquette wasn't a job he wanted to pursue after he interviewed and gave it some thought

He could have used the interview as a means to get a raise and extension from UT

This is the most logical explanation.

If you're just trying to get more money, you let it float that another school is courting you. But to actually go interview there is akin to burning a bridge to your present employer.

It was a stink to high heaven when Bobby Petrino did it to Louisville.

This news broke at 12:01 April 01. It's an April's fool joke. ....LOL

I'm not saying that a coach can't be interested in another school. You can have your agent talk to their agent, whatever.

But to actually go interview there, when you have a healthy raise and extension offer waiting at your present employer, is pretty telling.

Whatever the reason, he's still our coach and will be for some time. Now let's go get some recruits, fresh off our great run to end the season
