Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

I'm gonna say it....I think race is a not small part of the equation with regards to the Cuonzo Situation.

It's unfortunate, but I think it has everything to do with who he followed. He is the polar opposite personality from Bruce, and the lackadaisical way the teams started behind the 8 ball every year has made it worse. Very good coaching job this year, but the jury is still out on his overall performance.

There may be some semblance of incorrect perceptions by some of the boosters, however. Sadly, there are some who will always judge on the outward appearance first.

Against my better judgment I'm going to throw in some of the opinions that I've heard this year.
Let me make this very clear - this is not my opinions or beliefs, only what I've heard from others.
*About 10%-15% don't like Martin because he is Black.
*About 25% don't think he can recruit good players.
*Easily 75% don't like it because he has replaced Pearl, but to clarify it wouldn't matter who it was, they wouldn't like it.
*This was an interesting one, about 25%-30% didn't like the racial make-up of the team - they felt that there should be 2 to 3 white kids on the team.
*About 20% believe that Tennessee should make every effort to keep Martin because of his ethics, his background, his Christian leanings and that he can win without "lying and cheating" (their words).
*And last - one person hated him and said he shouldn't be coaching anywhere because he couldn't understand him when he talked. I replied to him that he was tone deaf on bass sounds and he asked what difference that made and I said "just forget it"!
Just thought some of you on VN would like to read what I've heard and I wonder if any of you have heard similar comments.

I believe you've fully accounted for 165% of Vol basketball fans. Good job.

Your statistics and polling methods may be a little suspect though, just saying.

I have re-started this post 3 times, before posting... untyping what I have said each time. I will simply leave it at this.

Racism sucks, in any form, with any attempt to justify it.

That is all.

I'm a cancer and world hunger hater myself.

Wow.... I guess their administration and the weakness of their conference really hurt them.

I thought was all but a done deal. Good for the Vols, IMO.

Or Dave Hart isn't as stupid as everyone thinks he is for some odd reason just because he doesn't run his mouth to media. Time and time again Hart has always kept his moves close to his vest so his competition doesn't know his intentions. Hart tends to always come out on top

I honestly don't get the Hart haters.

Completely baseless. Everything has improved since he got here.

1. Football, upgrade by far
2. Baseball, upgrade by far
3. Basketball, jury out, but recent success is encouraging
4. Lady Vols, lost the legend of Pat, but they continue to be strong
5. Track, coach out, new coach yet to be seen
6. Academic support for athletes, hugely improved
7. Softball, doing great

Yep, I'm happy

I do not approve of racism in any form. But for the record I actually have heard of more complaints that Pearl was Jewish than of Martin being African - American. I knew of fans wanting to get rid of Pearl for that reason, and they did not care how much success he had. They refused to follow the program while Pearl was at Tennessee.

I never said this was a poll or that it was + or - any percentage of being correct. Like most people on VN people I listen to or talk to have more that one opinion about any circumstance. I am very happy that you were able to count up the percentage numbers though. Did you read anything besides the numbers to see if you agreed or disagreed with what some people said? You also have to understand that this was comments I remember people making over the past year, which is long before your petition. :)

Just a comment - I also heard a small number of people that didn't like Pearl because of him being Jewish, not sure they were ever BB fans though. I heard many more complaints about Pearl giving playing time to his son because they figured there was 2 or 3 on the bench that was better than him.
