QB competition..

Doug Matthews talked about the QBs today on his radio show in Nashville and it supported my theory. First of all, there's only been 8 Spring practices - small pool of info and a long way to the season. BUT . . . right now Worley would start - his experience helps protect the ball and not turn it over, but not a winning scenario against strong teams. Peterson has a lot to prove after Florida and the current staff did not recruit him. The future obviously is down to Fergy & Dobbs. Worley starting gives Ferguson a chance to come in and show what he can do; Dobbs had up and down freshman moments but not enough then or now to separate himself. Fergy always had the stronger arm, an Alpha male presence, and is athletic - the type you hope works out. We don't know yet, but he has all the tools to potentially be pretty good, and Dobbs won't be a terrible second choice.

They were trying to get him to play for them in cinci.

Maybe they won that round when TN signed him, but MTSU and Florida International also offered - TN looks to be the biggest school offering. Peterson holds the ball so long that he is usually in trouble. That's a bigger problem with any kind of read/run option offense.

I think the decision has to be Dobbs or Ferguson. If you had a solid complete senior qb and your looking to be the top SEC team, then you generally go with him that guy. But Worleys not that guy, and I really don't think that should be our aim this year either. It would be nice, and i think we have the potential, but i see this as our final rebuilding year. I don't realistically see us winning the SEC, but hey who knows.. Dobbs or Ferguson are both young guys, if your looking towards the future, you have to choose one of them. They both have more upside potential than Worley in my opinion. I really don't wanna see Worley get the nod, because he might be more solid, but we're not gonna see anything more from him this year than we did last year in my opinion. I think our potential with Dobbs or Ferguson is a lot higher. Peterman might sneak up, hes still got a few years, but I don't think he's the guy either.

That's where I stopped reading. Sorry dude, but their there and they're are there for a reason.

Your and you're are there for a reason too.

So his 40 yard touchdown run against Kentucky gave you no hope? That was the longest run by a UT QB since Tee Martin. And I believe it was actually longer than any of tees and Dobbs had several big runs like this while playing through the gauntlet of our schedule. Think about this with me for a minute. His first meaningful minutes playing for us he had to play against #1 Alabama, the next week #9 Missouri then #11 auburn. That's a hell of a way to break in a true freshman quarterback with no true tight end target and his best receiver being a true freshman. Not to mention a new coach with a whole new scheme the team still wasn't exactly thriving in last year. I'll give Dobbs a pass. He impressed me, and he has worked his butt off the get bigger faster and stronger this offseason. Don't write him off yet man.
Kind of makes you wonder what's up when some posters go to really, really pushing a particular player. Hopefully, whoever does the best overall in practice this spring and this August and works the hardest in the weight room and offseason, will be the one who gets the nod. That's what we all want.....right?:eek:k:

Dobbs does not have the IT factor that we need, has a bad arm and plays like a timid rabbit. You can always see a spark in a future great true freshman.... I saw nothing in Dobbs. Worley is average with a low ceiling.... let's all hope Fergy lives up to the hype.

Of all the people I talked to who watched the games and watched Dobbs play they all agreed that not only could he throw but he hit the numbers. He consistently threw the ball right at the chest, right at the numbers. The sad truth was at the time our receivers couldn't hold on to it.

Ainge likes Ferg... Ainge being a QB makes me tend to take his opinion above all the others out there when it comes to QB. Only person I would trust besides Ainge to make that decision would be the coach himself.

But from his time watching practices etc.. which he gets to watch more then the other Media people because he is a former player, He says Ferg has the best arm and is really starting to put it all together.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Worley start out the year.. but Ferg will be the QB of the future for UT.

But even if it happens that way, I do expect Dobbs to get significant play time in packages/plays that take advantage of his mobility when we get to those situations where we need it.

Butt with all the talent we have at WR, we need the QB that has the best chance and tools to get the ball to them, so QB with the best arm makes sense to me..

I highly doubt Peterman will ever see the field again. I'd guess Worley, Dobbs/Ferg, then Peterman. Then Worley will graduate, Dobbs/Ferg will move up to start, and we'll land a qb in the 2015 class that will be good enough to be the backup/start in his first year. So unless Petetman just had a fluke of a bad game last year, I think he's practice squad. Dobbs really isn't that great either and we don't know anything about Ferg, so expect Worley to start. I think he will be much improved and I think he can lead us to more SEC wins than the others.

Matthews said that or you? If Worley can get the ball out quickly to the playmakers UT has on the edge and make the right decisions then that IS a winning scenario... against anyone.
Peterson has a lot to prove after Florida and the current staff did not recruit him.
Who is Peterson? Peterman WAS recruited by Jones while at Cincy. Jones not only liked him then... it is pretty apparent that he re-recruited him to get him to stay at UT after last fall.

NO ONE has seen Ferguson in a college football game. Crompton probably has a stronger arm than ANY of these guys. For that matter, Crompton had a stronger arm than Ainge when they were "competing" for the job in Spring 06. Many here including me were certain that if Crompton didn't take the job before the season that Ainge (coming off a much worse season than Worley under MUCH better circumstances) then he would before mid-season. Ainge was GREAT that fall. The only reason Crompton played was Ainge's injury.

I'm not saying Ferguson won't be great. Maybe he will. But this certainty that some of you have that he MUST be the guy and is FAR more talented than the others... is just crazy.

ALL FOUR have the talent to be very good SEC QB's. For me, this isn't an either/or but rather a "who". I can and will support any of them. But I end up arguing against folks who support Ferguson and those who diss Worley... because that tends to be where the most irrational arguments come from. Both guys ARE talented.

If you are a Vol fan... why not support all of them? Why the compulsion to dismiss the ability of some to support "your guy"?

Ainge was just saying that he watched Saturday's practice and that Worley and Riley are clearly better than the other 2. He was saying that they are the most accurate throwers and were making the right reads/progressions. He was also saying that Croom and Devrin Young were playing really well. Obviously things can change and it's a long way til the first game, but I really think Worley will be the starter and Riley will be the backup.

How many people remember when Worley was playing last year? We were on here calling for his head because honestly it was hard to even watch. We have a win against a good team and everyone thinks he will be great. Just be prepared to see he is pretty bad in real games.

I didn't find it hard to watch beating "a good team". Would love to see a couple more this year.

I found it hard to watch throw after throw hit the ground in the dirt before it reached the receiver. I found it hard to watch the short routes be so inaccurate they flew by or over their head. I found it hard to see him never run a read option. He didn't turn the ball over. That's all he did.

He played pretty well against Georgia and we almost beat them. He came close to beating Florida as well. I think he's a smart player and has enough physical ability to get the job done.

I hope he improved since then, but most of his best throws were when receivers slowed down and came back to the ball and made a catch. I can't imagine how many touchdowns we have if he hits them in stride.

So Worley starts...we get slaughtered in OK and we make a change just like in the swamp last year. How many games do we lose at the beginning of season before Butch pulls Worley? I say start Ferg/Dobbs and build!!

I support whoever wins the dang thing...vast majority will afterwards...until the first bounced pass and/or interception...alls we do on here is fun...our votes don't count.

I think a lot of that was the fact it was a new offense and new/young receivers. The timing and chemistry just hadn't developed. I have a feeling he will be much better this season. I think that despite starting last season, Dobbs will be 4th string. Everything I've read and heard about him suggests he has real problems with being an accurate passer. But then again, some people can develop in ways we don't expect and truly surprise us.

Wow yeah Dobbs really proved himself last year. If he starts then he would definitely have improved enough to be most improved player in the country because quite frankly he sucked! From the practice videos I've seen and from all of the reports I've read from reporters who are actually attending practice sessions RF is the one who And I quote " head and shoulders above the rest as far as arm strength goes". We will see what happens.

Nick Stephens was also "a 5 star" when it came to arm strength. So was CJ Leak, and Crompton had arguably the strongest arm of any QB from 2000-2010... For what all that is worth.

I honestly think Ferg is the future. I like the reference alpha male. Sounds like he has the it thing we all talk about. However, I don't think you can say Worley has no chance, its not like he has been the starter a long time either. But I do think we should go with Ferg and stay with him.
